Ive just opened the box, :o cleaned it, photographed it, and popped it on here,
I have an idea who may have made this, if im right its certainly MY best ebay buy ever,
Nuff said ;)
Please let me know your opinions ;D
Cheers all,
Andy

Some more photos :D
ps my clue for the maker is from the 20th Century glass book, by Judith Miller,
but i am by no means sure i am right with my prediction!
-
Me again ::)
Ive been flitting about on both sides of the Atlantic for this one. USA Bohemian or modern Studio??
Im just getting more confused
I shall now be patient, Warren,Adam A, or US partners, you any ideas on this one?
Andy

I can't tell you who made it, but I can tell you that I have its twin. I admit :-[ to thinking it was possibly a modern import.
-
Hi Glen,
well they say if its too good to be true, then it probably isnt!
Is yours just the same, its a well made piece of glass. Not much sign of wear to the base,
but then it may have been in a cabinet, I dont think its made yesterday.
Andy
(Glen , where did you get yours?)
-
Andy, I can see why you were drawn to it - it's a nice decorative piece. The glossy finish, construction, and lack of a studio signature have me thinking fairly recent import, as well. If not yesterday... maybe 10-20 years old?
-
Mine is identical. The base is the same - smooth and no sign of wear. I'm clueless as to the maker. If I had to criticise it in any way I would say that the iridescence is a bit too slick and glossy for my taste (but then iridescence is my "thing" ^-^ so I'm a bit picky ::)).
But fingers crossed for it turning out to be a "find" (mine came from a charity shop about 4 or 5 years ago).
-
Quick photos (so quick that I didn't even have time to get rid of all the dust :-[)
-
Warren, could you stop telling me everything ive been getting are fakes/copies! ;D ;D
Glen, who knows?
If its a copy, then its very similar to a couple of Steuben pieces on pages 122/3 of the book mentioned
above, but ive never handled a Steuben piece, or seen ones bottom.
Mine has tool marks under each of the flares around the rim. It lets no light through it. It was quite
grubby, and was better for a good clean.
Andy
getting more confused, but not convinced either way
(just seen your photos, not much doubt its a twin!)
-
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Andy! :)
Besides, if the imitation Loetz is actually a Harrach piece, then that's just as good, in my opinion! (I probably collect Harrach and Kralik more than any other makers, anyway)
Regarding Steuben (something I don't collect personally)... a Steuben piece would 99 times out of 100 have a ground and polished pontil, and be signed, not to mention other differences in construction.
The fact that two of these pieces wound up in charity shops should tell you something. :)
You do have a good eye, though, and you're looking for some of the right things - the green threaded vase was a STEAL for the price you paid! This one, I'm just not feeling warm and fuzzy about it. ;D
-
And your tulip vase was hardly a mistake :o
-
Hi Christine,
Tulip vase did well, i feel a bit guilty because without the help and id of a Tulip vase from
all on the GMB, especially Patricia, i wouldnt have got such a good price for it, and i know she wanted it :-[
so Patricia, if your watching, many thanks for the help, sorry you werent successful :(
Regards
Andy

Steuben glass is also a bit more subdued in iridescence. it wouldn't be so garishly bright if it were steuben. As Warren said Steuben the construction would also be very different if it were steuben. I have to agree with more modern import or perhaps a art glass student piece. For example pilchuck school of glass students are not allowed to sign their ware while they are still learning.
-
Hi and thanks azelismia,
i can certainly see from the photos of Steuben in my books, that the finish is more 'subtle'
Im thinking the maker of my vase was copying a Steuben or Loetz style, and i think has made
a very nice object, i also dont expect you can see tool marks on Steuben , such as i have
around the shaped rim.
Im happy with the £5 i paid, ;D , and will keep searching for more clues to this one.
Coincidence that Glen has its twin, and of all the hundreds of websites ive visited, ive never seen another
anywhere else, or i presume anyone else has. Maybe another will turn up with a label :D

Love it i would have paid all of £5 for that vase and a bit more, hope you trace it and it turns out to be something great,

Hey Andy,
As far as the tulip vase is concerned, you bought very well and you sold even better.
Don't forget I already had one, bought for just a bit more than what you paid.
You punched the right keywords for eBay though, it's going to one of the members of our club . She had just admired mine, a few weeks before yours came onto the market.
As for the vase on display here, don't ask me anything about the glass part but in England they are used for hyacinth bulbs as well (does that make it English?). Us continentals are not so over the moon about the model and not so convinced either but if it measures about 20cm and you can easily slip 2 fingers in ( I realise what I'm writing here, but it IS one of our criteria!) then for England you could list it as such. Good luck again,
Patricia
-
Thanks Patricia :)
I hadnt thought of this vase being a Hyacinth vase, I would have thought its too large,
its 22cm tall, I can just about squeeze a couple of fingers in!
I thought a bulb vase was clear glass, so you can see the roots growing, or does this not matter
I may keep this a little while in the hope of putting a name to it, i am now leaning towards it
being fairly recent, but i think some time and effort went into its manufacture.
Its got some glue marks from stickers on the base, could just be a charity shop/car boot price ticket,
but maybe one will turn up with a label?
Always the optomist, the fact Glen has an identical one, maybe they were a pair ;D
Regards

Just thinking its interesting the ebay item is in the US, as the vases are in the style of
Steuben or other USA Iridescent makers. Maybe they are from that side of the pond :-\

You cant say im not trying to do the research with this one ;)
Ive found a Rindskopf Trefoil vase, very very similar,
http://hometown.aol.com/dlfd912/index.html
Can someone tell me what a Rindskopf bottom looks like ;D
Andy
(edit) Very very very very similar :hiclp: What do the rest of you think??
-
Sorry, Andy... no way is yours by Rindskopf. The bottom of the Rindskopf piece is not lopped off flat like yours - the decoration would continue all the way 'round the bottom. Also, the key word here is TREfoil - Rindskopf's form is three foils, not six or more. It is a good resemblance in decor, but not the same. :)
