Came across this lovely piece a couple of weeks ago. It is acid marked Sevres , France, to the base along with a crest, this hasn't come out in the photo I'm afraid. I gather from other posts that other companies made glass for Sevres , mainly Choisy Le Roi and Daum. Does anyone know who may have made this one or have any idea of age? It has quite a bit of base wear. 17cms in height and 20 cms width. Thankyou!

The company signing Sevres is actually
Landier & Sons (with Cristalleries De Seves as a kinda add on name)
As I understand it, and it gets very complicated, their relationship with Choisy-le-Roi wasn't the usual one - in the 30s Choisy-le-rois made clear and opalescent glass for lots of people eg A Hunebelle and Etling. After the war Sevres bought out Choisey-le-roi (moulds and all) and hence you see some 30s patterns from say Etling appearing in the 40s and 50s with Sevres signatures. The place was then being run by the ubiquitous Pierre D'Avesn (ex Rene Lalique and Daum Employee)
So your piece is almost certainly post 1945 and could have originated from any one of the dozens of opalescent glass designers from before the war that used Choisey-le-roi as glass maker -not sure which though -its not a pattern I recognise from the more famous ones.
hope this helps
Mike

Get a close up of the signature, please. And what colour has it when you look through it - i.e. is it arsenic based or bone-ash?
The brand name Sèvres was sold in 2002 by CFC Daum to Vista Alegre Atlantis (VAA) from Portugal. I'm not sure if they changed the markings since then.

Thankyou Mike for your extremely thorough reply, much appreciated. Ivo, I'll try and get some pictures of the mark with a better camera. It shows blue around the base with a fiery orange red with shows throughout when it is against the light.
-
Fiery orange is good, that is the sign of bone ash, so you're probably looking at an older piece.

Here's the mark Ivo, hope you can see it, says "SEVRES" at the bottom and "FRANCE" upside down at the top.
-
That is indeed an old etch mark, not the recent one - but sorry unable to determine the precise age of the item.
-
Gosh Ivo, that was fast! Thankyou, yes it does look old especially with all the base wear that you've now seen properly. sure we'll get there in the end. Very best wishes, Gill

It's cool to find some information on this. I recently bought an alexandrite dish with this same mark. I wasn't able to find anything out about the company at all googling around. I have been guessing it to be dating somewhere between 1950-1970?
