Title: Blow-moulded vase

Good morning one and all,

This vase with asymmetrical surface decoration hase arrived. My initial feeling was that it is Czech or Polish (thinking Zabkowice, but I discount Asteroid as the pattern), but have a niggling idea that it may just possibly be Finnish.

Marcus, does it have a threaded top (or am I seeing things?) Is it perhaps a storage jar? Maybe that would narrow down the list of possible makers?

Hi Glen,

It has a narrow 5mm beaded rim, but no screw thread. The seller avowed it was 1940s, but I cannot think of any European maker who would have made something like this earlier than the late 1950s or early sixties.
From there on.....

I'm erring on the side of caution here. This feels  a decent piece, standing @ 10-11 inches high and 3 inches square, and the quality of the glass is very good, but beyond that.....

well obviously it is blow moulded in a bottle making machine, and it does look like Finnish design from the 1960s. Riihimäki and Kumela jump to mind - though you'd expect the rim to be polished flat. On the other hand, I would not be surprised if it turned out to be a 1950s storage jar from France or Belgium, because the top is suitable for sealing off with paraffin, check cloth and a fancy ribbon....  in any case a luxury item, otherwise the bottom would be marked "Le Parfait" or somthing similar.  I also have seen similar things from Oberglas Austria - they're my pet hate for producing machine made confusables and plastic lined bottle stoppers  :lol:

I'm stuggling a bit with this, as you have no doubt gathered. I'm pretty sure this is crystal, rather than a soda or potash glass. It is a bit of a conundrum, but nice to have a challenge now and again :lol: .

Could it be borosilicate? In that case you could think of Reijmyre "Sial" (borosilicate) glass...

This may well be Czech, as have now found an image of Stanislav Kral, and glass-master Jan Bouska, working in the model/realisation studio at Cesky Kristal, in 1975. In the image is Pan Bouska, with what appears to be this vase, or a variant being worked on at the chair.

Not what I had expected, but an interesting turn-up.
