Hi
I used to have several Caithness thimbles like this one (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335820906&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=190226370127&item=190226370127), and assumed that the bases - like the mini paperweight on top - were glass, until I discovered plastic moulding flashes on the blue base of one of mine. Yet the colourless ones I owned appeared to be glass.
Does anyone know whether all genuine ones are glass, or did Caithness use coloured plastic bases at some point?

No idea but is seems quite likely. The bases and stones were glued not fused together so any material would fit the process. Perhaps Stratton had plastic ones done.

Hi, If you go to the thread "How small can a paperweight be" and scroll down to one of my posts, there are some images of my early mini weights,but behind them you will see some of the other coloured thimbles Caithness used in the early eighties.
