Title: Hot worked ashtrays: Czech confirmed
Post by: langhaugh on June 08, 2008, 09:16:46 PM
I've found a few of these ashtrays, all about 7" high and all bought in Canada. The glass usually has a yellow tinge, though one has a blue sommerso drop. I thought originally they could be Chalet, but, according to what I've read, Chalet was usually marked and none of these is. I added the Harrtil (also bought in Canada) because it made me think that they might be Czech. The glass feels and looks the same. I've included the bottom on one as they all have the same bottom. Please ignore the label as I put it there. Any help appreciated.

Hi,
I have a bud vase with a similar net finish as your 3rd picture shows.  This was identified by Ivo as "Merletto - a netting of asbestos. An Italian invention, but most examples are HARRTIL glass, designed by Milan Metelák at Harrach'ov glassworks in the late fifties."  So my guess would be Czech

Sorry, bubbles. (It's been a while since I called anyone that.) My original post wasn't too clear. I know the third piece is Harrtil from Czechoslovakia (I have a few pieces). Because of the similarities between the Harrtil and the other pieces, I thought the other pieces might also be Czech. Not a very reliable method of attribution, but, I hope, a starting point.

The pieces are as heavy as they look.

Thanks.

Doh! Its me not you, I didn't read it properly, I blame it on the tablets!  However I feel really pleased with myself, I recognised something right for once!

Title: Resolved: Harrachov
Post by: langhaugh on September 17, 2009, 04:54:36 AM
Many thanks to BoBA for sending me a scan of a page from the Czech Glass Review showing this to be Harrachov. One was shown on the Michel Blais web site as being Chalet, which, I think, has led to the confusion. All the examples I have (six now) were bought in Canada. Anyone seen them in Europe, or anywhere else, for that matter.

It was Czech Glass Review, (Jan) 1-1958 caption by the picture "oven moulded ashtray ... No: 15/2966 .... in various colours ... manufactured by Harrachov Glassworks."  Does this make it a resolved- identified thread?
