Title: Sunderland Glass paperweights
Post by: tropdevin on June 09, 2008, 08:23:19 AM
Having seen these  (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335820906&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=280234648190&item=280234648190) advertised, I wondered whether anyone out there can point me to pictures of other paperweights that the factory made.

Strange, I was holding one yesterday at the Glasiers Hall fair by London Bridge.  I think it was Just Glass that had it, and I believe my dad has one as well so maybe he'll put a pic up of it when he comes on next!

Hi son!

Pictures attached of what I believe to be a Sunderland Glass paperweight.

It's smooth bottomed and signed SGL and 'Selene' with also '99'  (or 66 if you stand on your head!).  So similar to the weights on ebay.

I've seen other Sunderland paperweights, all of an abstract design, but 'proper' paperweight shaped.   I've  not seen the design now on ebay.

Mine has remote echoes of an Ysart single harlequin in style.

They also made a range called whirl, i had a couple, i will see if i can find a pic.
on the base was SGL WHIRL
Meant to say they were scratch marked, not etched if that's any help.

The first one looks similar to a Robert Held Art Glass paperweight. I guess if it wasn't for the signature (and perhaps the dimentions?) you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

The Robert Held examples shown in the webpage have "sharp fin-like" protusions whereas the SGL ones have smooth rounded ones.
