Title: Caithness ? Edinburgh ? - ID = Caithness
Post by: tropdevin on June 16, 2008, 06:27:48 AM
Does anyone know who made this weight? (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335820906&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=260251991729&item=260251991729) The canes look like Caithness.

Alan

These have been discussed before somewhere and I think Alan Scott gave an explanation. If I recall they were Caithness and made as a standard design for engraving for specials such as the Canberra etc. I have one without any engraving that I think was a second as the rings are out of alignment. The date  1986 does put it at the same era as the Edinburgh weights and so the canes are the same as those used in the  E weights

When are you going to put up the pictures of last weeks wonderful old english purchase??

Hi Martin

Thanks for the information.

Regarding the Old English weight, (assuming you mean the Clars Auction Arculus doorstop), I do not know when I will see it! The item is in San Francisco, and my brother-in-law will pick it up.  But it may remain with them until we next visit that area of the USA - maybe a year or two! Or I may pay an arm and a leg to ship it....

Hi ,Just to confirm Martin's post.It is indeed Caithness and one of the many corporate editions we did with standard cane designs round the edge. Those canes were first designed and made by Harry Mckay and myself in the early 80s and the same cane designs were used in other weights untill the day the perth factory closed ,particularly the pale green, purple and gold ones you see in the weight shown here.

Allan S - thanks for confirmation. I recall you giving that info before.
Alan T - yes - that was the one. I think you did remarkably well with that one. The only other one I have ever seen is the one in the Bob Hall book.  I stayed up to watch on live auction - there was also a nice Chinese White with the small boy which I would have expected you to get as it was most unusual. Both quickly went above my max.   My brother and niece are also in San Francisco.  I have had her send me a few things from US - and it doesn't usually get too expensive - the USPS rates are quite low. Or is it that heavy??

Allan S. Many thanks for the confirmation of the source of the paperweight.

Martin.  I do own a similar door stop, but with 4 of the 5 paperweight setups near identical. I too bid on the Chinese white, but someone obviously wanted the lot more than me - maybe for the other items?

Regards to all

Alan
