Title: Anyone know of a Nutty?
Post by: stevetheb on July 08, 2008, 07:00:06 PM
Ok strange request I know.

I found this attached tankard at a car boot sale, I bought it because the fish looked just like the ones on a engraved Whitefriars vase I own.

Despite some research, I've got nowhere.

The few facts I have are:

a) It's a 1 pint tankard.

b) It's engraved with the name "Nutty"

c) It's about 11 cms tall

Any ideas? Unlikely I know...

I don't know about the 'Nutty' bit, but those look like the engraved fish pattern used by Whitefriars in the 60s.  If they are, then it's quite an exciting piece.   :)

This smoke coloured vase has never been identified. I thought it was Holmegaard - noone recognised it as WF when I tried here some years ago.

Mm...but they're not exactly the same fish Ivo.   :-\

Here's something I found quickly on wf.com (watching 10 Years Younger at moment!)

Having looked at the fish really closely...although they, and the weeds are remarkably similar, they're not quite identical.  Can you post a close up of the signature please?

(Only just realised you said you thought it was WF in your first post...I didn't see that  ::))

Oh I'm not saying I think it's a Whitefriars.. but I did think the engraved fish look pretty much the same..

It's not signed, but has the name "Nutty" engraved - I'd think as a present of some sort...

Mmmm...the fish reminded me immediately of WF too, although I've only ever coveted them from photographs.

Looks almost like a souvenir signature, doesn't it?  I see you've posted this on WF.com, maybe they'll have some idea.  Actually, I'd like to know who did this engraving, so perhaps that information will come out when you have some replies.

Name looks cut to me ( nigel ) so maybe a gift for someone at the glassworks.

That was my thought too. Perhaps one of the former Whitefriars men may be able to recall someone with the nickname of Nutty on the team?

I agree the fish are similar to W/Fs but the tankard shape looks more like Webb and i have seen marked Webb tankards with fish but more realistic fish not styalised.

I once had some Webb with stylised engraving on. 30's pieces.

I finally got a comment from the whitefriars.com "is it Whitefriars?" feature...

"Graham Cooley 06/08/08

Its Dartington, Frank Thrower, can't remember the number."

If that helps anyone.. I'm still looking!

It doesn't look like a Frank Thrower tankard to me (I'm talking shape, never mind the fish) and it certainly isn't in either of my two books.
