Title: Sequel to Adams & Co Vase lamp - The Temple Lamp Base
Post by: uncommonglass on July 12, 2008, 03:26:08 PM
At an estate sale yesterday and found this awesome piece, if I do say so myself   I would not have had a clue about it if not for Sid's id of it's cousin, the Vase Lamp.  I had to come over and show you guys.

Hi Frank!  It's ALL one piece, isn't it amazing?  No metal fittings , no glue even ;)  It came out of the mould like that...The mould lines are at each column.  Oh, and Did I mention it's 10 inches tall????   :o  I found it at an estate sale yesterday here in North Carolina.

Not sure what I did to get it in the resolved section here...I ferget real quick  :-[  I think I had searched for the thread on the Vase Lamp, that was in resolved section and and and, I ferget after that...:)

This is pictured in the found catalogue on the Sirlampsalot site:

Thanks :)  I forgot to mention, there's also a patent date/s

"Patented March 20 1883 July 25 1882"  all caps, embossed around the top outer rim of the base section.

Just mind bending imagining the making of the mould.  Incredible it's survived all these years.  The only damage I could find is on the top inside ledge where the oil lamp sets.  Just a couple of small chips.

No one had a clue what it was.  I found it upside down.  If not for Sid's discovery of the catalogues, this would also still be a mystery.

Thank you Sid!

This piece has also appeared in some references as an APPLESAUCE LAMP.  Don't know why.  I have seen it in vaseline glass.  Someone ID'd this thing several years ago for our vaseline glass club when a vaseline base showed up on ebay.

Mr V - Wow, a vaseline version would be one L of a find!  Applesauce lamp?  Can't imagine why it would have been given a crushed fruit name

Thuro called it that in one of their lamp books.  doing a quick google search for applesauce lamp yielded a picture from green valley auctions:

Green Valley's description:
ADAMS TEMPLE / APPLESAUCE LAMP (Lot #1188, left - $880), stand, colorless, brass collar with #2 burner, shade ring, chimney and 4" cut and frosted Oregon shade. The base rim just below the columns shows the embossed patent references of "PATENTED MARCH 20 1883 JULY 25 1882." The original dome with what appears to contain it's original contents is sealed with a cork and paper label which reads "FRUIT BOWL PATENTED NOV. 15 1881 JULY 25 1882." Ripley, Vogeley and Adams. 13" h. Exceptional condition with one minute flake near column and arch junction.

Note: To find this lamp in such a complete state and in this condition is a rare occurrence.

I wonder if the other parts were in a different lot of the Estate Sale  :o

Mr V - Wow, that's it!  I don't have Thuro's books, and my library didn't have both of them.  The name Applesauce is still puzzling...

And you answered my other burning unasked questions, what's it worth and where's the best place to sell it.  I would dread packing and shipping it, worrying if it could withstand shipping at all.  But I could drive it to Virginia easy enough.
;)  I'll be in contact with Green Valley!

Frank - Can't tell you how that question has haunted me these last 48 hours too!!  There were many many fine oil lamps at the sale.  This estate/tag sale is huge, they have it every couple months.  It's really a team of buyers/pickers scouring the countryside and beyond for bargains to re-sell and then they put it all in one small building, hand out numbers the first day, and hold the sale for 4 days total.  There are always about 60-100 people in line that first day.  They line up to get numbers at 9 am, numbers are given at 1pm, and the sale begins 3pm.  The first rush into the building is a total free for all madhouse.  I got number 36 :(  Still, no one knew what this piece was, and I didn't even see it the first half hour in.  The lamp part may actually still be there today, in some other area.  There is so much stuff, they don't have room on the tables, it stays in boxes under the tables, going undiscovered till the workers unpack them.  Here's their website:

I must get back there today at 1pm!

  No...I didn't.   I did find this curious little tumbler like do-dad.  The color of the glass doesn't match the base.  It has a blue tint. But it fits perfectly into the center ring, and looks, from what I can tell, just like the one shown in the picture Mr V provided.  Just what is that do-dad there in the Green Valley pic?

Must be just a display dome, but yours looks footed as a tumbler?

Not footed, really, but there is a slight, um, lip? edge?  Not quite a tumbler...it looks much like a fairy lamp shade but like someone forgot to leave a hole in the top.

I'll get a better photo of just that piece later, tomorrow maybe.  I'm off to the dentist today :(

Okay, here is just the cup.  It's 3 1/4" tall, 2 and 3/4" wide base rim.  The flat end, is 1 and 3/8" and is slightly indented center.

Looking at sirlampsalot's site, the cup shown in the reprint is rounded.  Looking at the Green Valley auction picture, it's flat, like mine.

I can't imagine what other purpose this cup might have -  anyone?

I assume the center piece as shown in both examples is just decorative?

Possibly, other lamp types were used with the stand and rested on the flat part to prevent tilting.

Hello:

Very good find.  Two patents on the stand:

July 25, 1882 - No. 261,644 http://www.google.com/patents?id=6-5lAAAAEBAJ&dq=261644 (http://www.google.com/patents?id=6-5lAAAAEBAJ&dq=261644)
March 20, 1883 - No. 274,233 http://www.google.com/patents?id=y15AAAAAEBAJ&dq=274233 (http://www.google.com/patents?id=y15AAAAAEBAJ&dq=274233)

Sid - nice to 'see' you ~ thanks so much!  I poured over the patent info you provided!  I love where it says, "constitutes a cheap but handsome stand for lamps, epergnes, flower baskets or pots and many other articles"

Frank - I dunno, but it sure looks neat there :)
