Title: John Walsh Walsh Vesta Venetian (i think ! Bernard?)
Post by: Andy on July 18, 2008, 01:46:43 PM
95% sure its John Walsh Walsh Vesta Venetian, its too similar to my other one not to be,
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,18421.0.html

Maybe Bernard could confirm. Its 15 inches tall, Opalescent.
The knotted foot has mould marks.
20 times better than it looked in the photo from where i bought it from, i think my
instincts were right this time >:D

Cheers
Andy

Just walked into Oxfam, saw this 19 1/2 inch, 50cm Whopper straight away!
Its got to be another Walsh Walsh  ;D

More pictures after the Fairy liquid comes out, its very dirty.
Andy

Cleaned. No opalescence, different colour, otherwise, just feels the same,
Im pretty sure its Walsh Walsh Venetian. Bernard, are you free?

That's more or less what I was going to say

I know exactly what you mean, that would be my second choice  ;)
its the foot, the rim, the size, the similarity to my other blue ones, and if its Walsh Walsh,
it is meant to look Italian ;D

Cheers

I think you're falling victim to wishful attribution.

The swirls swirl the opposite direction just for a start... ;)

A few pints of Guinness later,
as soon as i saw it in the shop, i thought, thats got to be Walsh Walsh,
apart from the colour, the swirls going the wrong way, (Christine, i did notice  ;)  )
It was very dusty, i thought i could see opalescence, now its clean i cant see it
any more,  :(

I have no idea if Walsh did this colour, its quite an impressive and difficult vase to blow and put together,
also, not sure if all the Venetian range had opalescence to them, cant find a lot of info about them,
i have nothing against those clever Italian Glassmakers, again, its those
Anglo Irish, Celtic, European Instincts  ;)
Im not sure either way,(a bit less confident  :( )  will keep looking for more info on Walsh Walsh Venetian,
and keep nagging Bernard ;D

C & I ,Thanks for all your help,
a great hobby, and i love a bit of doubt and a good hunt around!

Ivo, a bit off topic, my Dad happened upon this crystal bowl, (pyramid cut) it came with a watercolour he wanted
(at local auction)and this was thrown in, i cleaned it and it looks gorgeous, it has a sticker, 24% lead crystal,
made in Slovenia.
My Dad said, 'what is Lead crystal'  picked up the nearest book on my table, Glass fact file a-z,
and found the answer to his question, very impressed when i told him , i (sort of) know the author!
Thanks and keep up the research, i hope i can help out sometime in the future!

 ;D ;D ;D

Andy.

According to Reynolds (The Glass of John Walsh Walsh 1850-1951, p16) "around each piece were lines resembling fine iridescent Venetian threads". The items illustrated and the catalogue picture seem to have a wide vertical rib and much finer anticlockwise swirls

Andy,
the Slovenia cut item is probably Edinburgh Crystal who had many of their products made there at least since the early eighties. I have a decanter somewhere with a large Edinburgh and a tiny Slovenia sticker.

Thanks Christine,
my doubts are growing now :(
Im thinking id quite like that book, its on my wish list!
Are there any pictures of the blue ones in it?
and thanks Ivo, Edinburgh, interesting, its a nice bowl, highly polished, and great refraction :D

Andy

No blue ones illustrated. The book is quite good but much of it is scans of working drawing reduced from A3 to just over half A5. A bit of a magnifying glass job and mostly cut stuff. Having said that I have been using it.

Spotted your tall amber vase yesterday, but in turquoise-blue, bearing a generic 'Made In Italy' gold foil label.
