Title: Pilkingtons Glass Sample Box
Post by: Anne E.B. on August 06, 2008, 02:32:29 PM
Thought this might be of interest.  An old box of samples from Pilkington Bros.Ltd. St. Helens.

The box itself is covered in cloth with tooled writing.  The only words which are still legible are "Figured Rolled" and "St.Helens England", the rest being worn.
The contents are detailed on the inside lid.  Inside, protected by felt (the sort that use to be used under carpets), are 35 samples each with their own label detailing the pattern name/number/tint.

I've only shown the tinted ones, as these were easiest to photograph.

I'm guessing this was used by sales representatives to the trade.  It would be interesting to know how old it actually is though.  It seems quite ancient.

I love that sort of thing Anne, it almost takes you back in time, more than the actual item.
What an interesting find   :hiclp:

Very interesting, I see company formed in 1824,
called Pilkington Brothers Ltd from 1894.
this looks quite early 20th C maybe?

I'd say 20s from the typeface.
