Title: French or Bohemian pitcher - looking for ideas
Post by: Galle on August 07, 2008, 02:47:08 AM
Greetings! I have this wonderful enameled pitcher with a gladiator's helmet beautifully done on the front, and I'm trying to figure out where it came from. Interesting elements are the ring around the neck and a large, very shallow polished dimple on the base, and a gold stripe on the handle. One expert suggested that a gladiator helmet is a Bohemian motif, but the aforementioned elements seem to suggest French to me. It is 10" high, and quite heavy - about 3-1/2 pounds. I'm going to attach some pics in batches of four. Any ideas would be most appreciated!

I can see why you say French - it has the look of a Legras piece, especially the shape. But there are some details which make this doubtful: the crosshatched cold enamel, the raised lines and the underside. So I think you are probably looking at a piece of Heckert (Silesia) or at a product from Ehrenfeld (Cologne).

Thanks, Ivo... Heckert is kind of what I was hoping for when I bought it, but I'll settle for just knowing. :)

It is a quality piece, so it doesn't matter to me all that much. I'll check out Ehrenfeld - thanks again!

This reminds me of some pieces I've seen identified as Josephinenhutte Jodhpur.
However I've also seen some attributed as Fritz Heckert but the enamelling seems different.
Did you ever get a confirmed id on this one please?
thanks
