Title: Please help determine if these pieces are Murano Glass.
Post by: Catisfaction on August 18, 2008, 11:51:29 PM
Hi.

I was wondering if anyone here could help me to determine if either of these are Murano Glass and if so, an idea who made them.

TIA

Cat

1st  is a Purple decanter, 15" tall without stopper, 23" tall with the stopper.
It's the same design as a Blenko piece but is definately not Blenko. It has been suggested that it might be Etrusca of Empoli or Nason & Moretti of Murano. Any confimations, denials or additional info would be dearly appreciated.

2nd is a gorgeous glass Horse figuring, emerald green with clear head, legs and tail. Definately quality workmanship but from where? this one I'm thinking either Murano glass or possibly Polish, they've been producing some high quality glass of late, but I'm completely clueless.
It measures 12" tall and 10" wide. One thing I noticed that is an interesting feature is the flat area in the chest. I assume that's where the punty rod was and it was ground and polished to hide it?

3rd is a simple Apple, I mainly wonder if it's Murano glass because of the aventurine in the leaf. The apple has a stretch glass type iridescent skin on it.

These are difficult ones. Your horse and apple are Murano style pieces, but it is difficult to say for sure without seeing the same pieces that are attributed. Horses are made in almost every glass-making country. They are popular knick-knacks that take less than 5 minutes to make, so are turned out in fairly large numbers. There are several videos on You-Tube of people making horses if you are interested in watching them.

The apple leaf looks very Murano to me, but I do not know who might have made it. The iridescent finish is particularly nice. This type of iridescence is not common in Murano, but has been done. Several other countries have glass with gold and aventurine, though, so it is risky to say it is definitely Murano without finding one like it that has a good attribution.

I don't have any ideas for your vase. I have the feeling it is not Murano, but cannot say for sure.

Wish I could help more,
Anita

Thanks for the comments, it confirms pretty much everything I thought about these pieces lol!

I do wish Art glass wasn't so hard to attribute at times.

Wonderful Video!

They made a Cat. Now I know why my 25 cent yard sale cat sold so well on Ebay rofl
