Can anyone provide sources of reference on this topic please?

Frank — Hajdamach is the obvious starting point to me, with photograph(s).

20th century mainly. Hadjamach only mentions Ford but their products are largely unknown. Glen revealed Edinburgh Crystal, but there must have been others.

Hi,

There was also another company called Allen who had a thistle as a trademark. They came under the same trade union (Pressed Glassmakers friendly society) as Davidson, Sowerby and Co.

I've got a note somewhere of when they closed. I think Davidson bought some of their moulds. The caludron at the bottom of this page http://www.cloudglass.com/other.htm is sometimes found with the thistle mark. I also have a hobnail mug with the thistle mark as well.

The Scottish glassmakers of the 1800s did not feature much in the Pottery Gazette, so very little is known about some of these smaller ones.

Regards

Chris

They are listed in the Glass Study as

A. M. Allan & Co., 1867 - 1907 ?? Forth Glass Works, Firhill, Glasgow, Pressed glass bottles, medical bottles.

Interesting is that this company made moulds...
McGlashen (Stewart) & Son Ltd., 2 Canon Mills Bridge, Edinburgh, Mould makers, Moulds for glass and cutting stones.

Where did you get the info on the thistle mark? Does your bowl have it?

Hi Frank,

The bowl on the cloud glass web site does not have any marks, but I have another one in black which has the thistle mark.
I also note on the web site that I'm not 100% certain the bowl in amber cloud glass is by Davidson. The finish is very poor which is unlike Davidson.

I cannot find in my notes where I found the connection between Allen and the Thistle trade mark. I think, therefore, we should put a question mark against the attribution.

Regards

Chris

Chris — I've seen it somewhere, and, like you, I can't find it.   I've looked in both Notleys and it doesn't seem to be in either.   Most frustrating.

Is it the same thistle that Lattimore illustrates?
