Title: Harrtil Merletto Vase??????
Post by: chuggy on August 24, 2005, 09:39:27 PM
Hi folks
Just received this vase today that I bought as it looked interesting without really knowing what it is. Having now researched it I am 90% sure it's a merletto vase from the mid 1950's in a range called Harrtil. If anyone can confirm this for me I'd be grateful. It's in great condition and stands just under 6" high.

Hi Paul,
It certainly looks very similar to my vase.  See the thread entitled "what are these techniques called" Below is a link to my vase with the reply.

Thanks Ivo,
Here is a better picture of the base. Hope this helps.

yep, tha's Merletto - a netting of asbestos. An Italian invention, but most examples are HARRTIL glass, designed by Milan Metelák at Harrach'ov glassworks in the late fifties.

It was identified as such by Ivo.  I would be interested to know where you found your information. I searched for ages but didn't come up with much.

Hi Paul,

It looks as though it might be. Does it have a flat polished base? and difficult to tell from the image but glass colour?

One should be cautious of tagging everything made in Harrtil, by Harrachov, to Metelak. Certainly, three female designers produced designs in Harrtil. It is also the case that examples of Harrtil, were known to have been produced at the Chribska works, to designs by Ludvika Smrckova.
Regards,

Marcus

Thank you very much guys, I thought I had it tracked down right, but my expertise in Bohemian glass is minimal so I thought best check with the experts.
Yes Marcus the base is polished flat.
Very pleased and now off to track down a copy of the book.
Thanks Ivo

Thanks very much Peter for clarifying that. :)   I'm a bit dim   :? and need everything spelled out in monosyllables!!  Trouble is the more I find out about glass the more I realise I have to find out!  I really appreciate everyone's patience with us newbies.
