Title: Art glass vase with spurious signature but who is it?
Post by: Galle on September 24, 2008, 09:22:58 PM
Forgetting for a moment that this piece has a Labino signature - any ideas as to who really made it?

Thanks!

I don't know this artist or recognise the style of the vase.  Are you certain it isn't Dominick Labino?   :)

Not certain, but someone on ebay's PGP board suggested that it isn't his style or his signature, so I am exploring all possibilities. :)

Looks like a Germanic "1."  I don't know what countries write ones like that, but that might narrow it down...at least to who had it when they faked the sig, if that's the case.

In my humble opinion, this looks far too sophisticated for a studio piece dated to '66 - too finely blown and it has the appearance of having used much more modern techniques with colours and irridesence than individual artists had available in studios at that time. Things were much more fluid and lumpy and organic-looking back then.

That's a continental style number '1' - they write it like that in most of mainland Europe.

That's great...so it's narrowed down most likely to European art glass studios... I wonder how long that list is? :)

Very, don't forget Eastern Europe too. I agree that the style of decoration is fairly contemporary although it could have been done by one of the pioneers of the 'metal' decorations. Peter Layton is amongst those and it might be worth bouncing this piece off him as he is probably very aware of the others exploring the techniques around the world.

definitely not Dominck Labino's signature. I have his signature on a copy of the book he wrote. he gave it to me in 1976.

I have a signed copy of his book, too. Unfortunately, that's all I have that is signed by him. :(

The more I look, the more I'm thinking possibly Robert Eickholt? Is there a way to contact him?

Warren, I can't find an email contact or website for him anywhere (only lots of his glass in galleries), but I did find a postal address and phone number here:
