Title: Phoenix
Post by: pooleandpaperweights on September 28, 2008, 06:59:13 PM
Evening all

Having brought a Phoenix Butterfly at Cambridge, and just having listed its predecessor on ebay, I wanted to see their working dates so headed for Scotlands Glass to find they aren't mentioned in the list of makers?????

Is this Phoenix Paperweights that opened after Perthshire's closure?

If so, they opened in May 2002. I'm not sure how long they were open but it wasn't very long. A few of the workers from Perthshire worked with Willie Manson. The paperweights have very Manson-esque looking canes and twists.

I managed to get a hold of one Phoenix weight before they became scarce.

Seems to be very little info on when they closed, but 2002 seems to be right.  Yes, it was some Perthshire people, I've seen various names with Willie Manson being the main one.

I brought this at Cambridge

which is why I'm listing 290264055836 as it's been superceeded :)

I think Phoenix probably lasted into 2003.  They worked from Willie Manson's studio, and when I did a week long course with him in October 2003 the Phoenix operation had been closed a few months (I recall), although there was still quite a bit of stock for sale.
