Post by: chloe on October 01, 2008, 10:20:25 PM
Hi - can anyone offer an id on this vase at all please - ebay id number 380068936530 (link at bottom).  I saw an orrange one in a local charity shop for £1 today and was wondering if I should go fetch it?!

Both of these are Chinese as far as I can see - Dalian I think.

I spotted one of those in a charity shop window yesterday.  It had a label with a bar code on the base.  Not particularly good quality.

The vase is being touted about eBay just recently as a Christer Holmgren design for Holmegaard's 'Carnaby' series - and unfortunately is fetching some semi-serious amounts of money (although, in my opinion, anything more than £1-2 is a very serious amount for something of this dubious quality).

Thanks all!  £2.00 saved (and the embarassment!)

The yellow vase had me checking my Holmegaard files. It is similar to one of their models, but the ball on the stem is not as round and not as carefully made. The color is not as good. I can see how the casual shopper could be fooled. It would be nice if the sellers were not so casual in their attributions.

I have to add in defense of the seller above that he/she admitted to not knowing what the vase was. It is the auctions like the one Pinkspoons mentioned that bother me. It's sad to see people lose money when they get bad information.

I've been working on a 'Carnaby' guide, and this vase does feature in the 'contemporaries & imitations' section near the bottom of the page:

Hopefully when it's all finished and has working links to photographs it will take the challenge out of spotting Holmegaard's cased glass (much to the chagrin of some of eBay's more unscrupulous dealers). I'll hopefully be writing a similar illustrated article on the Gulvvase and its copies when I have the time.
