Title: Faux Metal Vase
Post by: TxSilver on October 11, 2008, 06:06:59 PM
Does anyone have an idea who might have done this vase? I believe the finish is called faux metal. The vase looks like a distressed metal foil was fused to the outside of the glass. The vase is 5" tall and made of thin clear glass that is peppered with black inclusions.

Thanks!

Could it be silver?  Are the black inclusions in the outer part of the glass, like they were marvered in, or all through it?

I'm thinking maybe the vase was rolled in some kind of frit with a flux, then electroplated.

Fast responses! Many thanks.

krsilber, the black "pepper" looks like it is on the inside glass of the vase. I don't know for sure, but the vase looks mold blown. The outside doesn't look like silver to me. It is pewter in color with the black dots hammered in. The metal isn't magnetic. Maybe it is a pewter or aluminum alloy foil?

johnphilip, I would be ecstatic if the vase is Monart, but my vase isn't the quality of the Monart pieces I've seen. I have the feeling that my vase started its market life with a 50 cent price tag on its base.  :spls: The glass reminds me of some of the tumblers we used to drink out of in the early 60s. Cheap but still cool  8)

Very similar to the Monart Lava technique link (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.view_images&product_id=2672&image_id=1900&Itemid=51) but of course it isn't. Is Royal Brierley a candidate though

I love the finish on the Monart vase. It looks like it is colored glass with open bubbles, like weathered pumice. Definitely a lot more refined than my vase. Finishes like these always start me trying to figure out how they were made.

With Monart it was a mix of enamels and charcoal. The iridescence on the early pieces was caused by impurities in the gas supply.

Anita's vase looks like the sort of ceramic glazes called crawling glazes. I wonder if it's possible to achieve the same sort of effect on glass.

It is just a lustre over the texture.
