Hi,
I've recently seen a small vase very much in the short squat shape of Frank Thrower's FT 58 and FT 78 vases but with different playing card suite symbols on each of the 4 sides. Rare Dartington??
Cheers,
Bryn

Hi,
I can now add that the item in question was listed on Ebay no. 280276869599.

Hi Bryn, yes it's Dartington from the late 1960s and my OH saw one the same (with the card suits) for sale at Dulwich Art Glass fair last April - if we find any reference to them in any of our books we'll update this thread.
-
Thanks Pip,
I was going to bid on it myself but I chickened out! :'( Typical!!.

Well it's not in the Smithson's book and they claim to have collected a sample of every Dartington Glass design until 1987 and almost all those Frank did for Wedgwood. They also had access to all the archives at Dartington

I haven't got the book you mention Christine but as I say we did see one for sale at the Art Glass Fair - obviously it's possible it could have been misattributed however we had no reason to believe they'd got it wrong - the shape is absolutely right. Perhaps Nigel will take a look at this thread and give us his input ...

It's not impossible that it's a post-Thrower Dartington Crystal design, but it isn't in Eve Thrower and Mark Hill's book, nor can I see in any of the posters or catalogue reprints in either book.

If I can just clarify something in your statement Christine - whilst you're correct that the design of the card suits isn't in Mark and Eve's book the shape with the flared neck is.

The shape is certainly looks to be similar to a Thrower shape but the card design isn't a Thrower design. That vase doesn't look as if it has the "waist" of FT58 shape in either size (Greek Key), yet looks too tall to be a FT72 shape (squat Greek Key). The closest shape design is FT66, the flared Abstract vase, but the patterns are abstract and not card suites., The FT66 only had a 2-year run so it might very well have been a shape revisited post 1987 by Dartington Crystal.
As I concluded before, it might be Dartington Crystal but I would seriously doubt it was pre-1987 Dartington Glass.
Linda and Stuart Smithson's book comprehensively covers Dartington 1967-1987 (including rarities) and Wedgwood Crystal 1983-1987. Mine has paid for itself four times over when I found an amber FT2 posy. Linda was selling them on ebay at less than the cover price including postage.

The e-bay item referred to is definately an FT66, (I have it in clear, midnight and kingfisher - anyone want to sell me a flame red one?!).
It appears on page 40 of the Smithson's book, page 90 of Mark Hilll's book and page 245 of Miller's 20th Century Glass.
The two sides shown in the e-bay photo are the "diamond" and what I call the "pineapple ring".

I concur, surrender, whatever ;D. It was the card suites that threw me but at least I arrived at the right shape. Can you post picture of the four sides of one of yours to make this thread useful when the ebay item vanishes please
