I bought this glass tankard recently because I was interested in who made the tankard as it has a date lozenge in the base. Engraved with ferns and inscribed ( Presented to Robert Mc Gill on his 3rd birthday by his Aunt Harriet).
The date lozenge is not 100% readable but very clear is the day of the month 4, A for the month of December, year looks like a D there is no O for year, parcel number looks like 1, so it looks like 4th December 1878 , but I cannot find any item register for that date, I know it possible for dates to be wrong, I have tried every possibility but still come up with nothing.

One might question the wisdom of glass for such a youngster, but it appears that the lad's mother put this charming piece "up" so that it has survived these many years. The date of the registry might well predate the time of the engraving by quite a while. If my wife and I had seen something like this when we were in England recently, we probably would have purchased it. I am still regretful that I didn't buy a mug engraved "Good Old Emily" at the Cambridge Glass Fair.
