I have a set of six of these hankerchief bowls, and the blue on them has a gorgeous luminous quality - like the green of uranium glass etc. I cant seem to find any details on this anywhere - is there a specific term for it? Assuming that there is something to it, rather than just a coloured glass, how is it made?
I've never seen anything like it!
(sorry photos to follow when I've rebooted my annoying pc!)

the bottom has a really bright aqua/blue tint, and towards the rims it gets more 'cloudy'

Does it glow if you use a UV (black light) on it? If so, then I suggest it was made by combining chromium and uranium in the glass batch.

Hi Chloe,
This is Blue-opal, the blue equivalent of 'Straw-opal', sometimes referred to as opalescent glass. The band of clouding is achieved by reheating the piece in the glory hole.

Now to find the matching plates...!

Could someone give me a clue as to who they are by please, as I have searched Nigels site but couldn't find any the same, not in the blue opal anyway. Not too well at the moment, and can't raise the energy to search any more so I would be grateful if someone would give the the answer, thanks.

However, you're right it's not blue opal.

Thanks Nigel :)
I have one on this thread http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,24759.new.html#new that I am trying to identify.
I do have one in straw opal as well, but the size is very slightly different, so did they vary?

Hello Janet,
Of course they vary - they're hand made ;)
