This paperweight has got quite a unique shape to the pontil base. Is it an Isle of Wight flame mark? I've heard of them but not seen one before!
Thanks
-
It's not Isle of Wight. Is it a salmon, in which case Strathearn?
-
i dont think it a mark just might be were the punti rod was cracked off, the base looks more vasart than strathearn and so do the cane's, all the same it's a nice weight

Thanky uo both - It's such a funny little swirl I thought it must be a mark! I had a look at the salmon mark and it's definately not that.
It looks a little similar in style to this Vasart one - 400003159614 - also the cross running through it has gold glitter (aventurine? sp?!) running through one of the swirls. Also it's not completely symmetrical - the central canes are a bit skewed, though reading through here I see that doesnt necessarily mean anything bad?
Thanks again

your's have early cane's

Hi
I'm pretty sure it is Vasart, given the rather crudely swirled canes, the individual cane design, the overall design, and the ground out pontil mark.

Just checked and it weighs 280g - which I gather is right for the smallest early weights?
-
I would think that any paperweight from Vasart Ltd (1956 to 1964) and Strathearn (1965 to 1980) which was slightly larger than 2.5 inch diameter would weigh about 280g. I don't think a paperweight can be deduced to be by "early" or "later" by its weight.

An example of the IOW mark and a detailed graphic are shown on this page http://ysartglass.com/Ysart/NotYsart.htm

Fab thanks Frank, I've not managed to see how the mark actually looks on a paperweight before.
