Title: Tumbler? Age? = Murano Puleguso
Post by: pam roybal on September 03, 2005, 04:05:36 AM
I am not sure if this is overshot or not, I hope one of the board members might know. It is really a nice piece love to find out the maker and value.
Thanks

One of my favourite glass types: Pulegoso. Popular in Murano since the 1930s and made by most manufacturers at one time or another.  I have a little 6"vase in the same colour variation - but yours seems to be larger? I assume the bottom is polished smooth - as befits a pedigree Murano piece.... Maybe the Murano board will yield more info - I'm curious too

Thank you for the help! I will check with the Murano board, maybe someone will have some info on it. The bottom is rough not grounded and it is 5 1/2" tall, it is a very nice piece and would love to have more info on it.
Here are the pictures of the possible overshot tumbler/vase. I did the best I could I hope it works. I need my son here to help me with my camera, still learning the in's and out's. Should I repost it on the Murano site not as a guest?
thanks

The picture still doesn't look good to me, the glass looks like tiny bubbles, like it was spun.

What does "overshot" mean?   I have seen the term used on a few occasions before, but never queried it.   Is it American for the English term "shot-blasted" or "sand-blasted"; or a general term for a matt finish, however made; or something completely different?

Thanks up front for any enlightenment.

Bernard, Pam misuses the term for her item here.
Pam, I suggest you edit out "overshot" in your title
(do this by going to your original post, make sure you are logged in, click on edit and edit the title which can be found on the upper right hand side)

Bernard, There is an explanation of Overshot Glass in this article by Stan & Arlene Weitman at Angela's Glass Museum On Line
http://www.glass.co.nz/overshot.htm

the article says
Quote
"Overshot glass was made by rolling a partially or fully inflated gob of hot glass on finely ground shards of glass that had been placed on a steel plate called a marver. The gob was then lightly reheated to remove the sharp edges of the ground glass."
But re-heating to remove sharp edges was not always done. I have a piece of Murano with very sharp overshot.

There was also much discussion of overshot in this recent thread

I will edit my first post but I wanted to add this close up picture first, my son was over last night and helped me get a good picture.

I am a little confuse, which is always the case, is overshot and pelugoso the same and if not do I have a pelugoso piece? And if I do have a pelugoso piece it seems that is not Murano but a piece done in Italy.

huh :?:
It's pulegoso, having fine bubbles the size of fleas (pulego). And, it has nothing to do with overshot glass. And yes, it was most likely made in Murano - though the Egyptians make a lightweight modern tourist version of it.....

Quote
Glass with a spongy appearance, with a great many air bubbles, to the point that it is almost opaque. The homogeneous and refined molten mass (with no air bubbles or impurities) is vigorously mixed in with salts (generally sodium carbonate or bicarbonate) that decompose due to the heat and liberate gases (carbon dioxide) dispersed in the form of bubbles of varying diameters.

Ivo,
Thank you for all of your help. I will start searching pulegoso. I actually have two of these one is smaller than the other.  :D

Pam, all your Tinypic links are dead. Do you still have the images for this topic please and if so could you add them back as attachments to a new reply below? Many thanks. :)
