Title: Glass Finds In One Afternoon
Post by: RetroPerceptive on November 07, 2008, 01:41:57 AM
This afternoon I went on a charity shop tour of two small towns near me. As I'm a ful time dealer this isnt unusual but the haul of glass I came out with is probbly my record.

A signed Riihimaki amber glass vase by Tamara Aladin - 75p

Cased Murano ash tray - 50p

Stennet Wilson 9 Hoop candle holder - £2

Large Whitefriars random tariled studio range vase - £2

Holmeguaard green cased hoop vase - £1

I dont think it beats my Orfors Kraka vase find for £5 but I think it equals it i value  :hiclp:

The Riihimaki piece is going in my own collection the rest is for sale.

The 'Holmegaard' vase will be by Hirschberg, Germany.

Youve bought Holmeguaard of me before and never complained???

Most likely you had the correct attributions those times, but in this instance not. Holmegaard never made green cased glass vases with hooped forms - these vases were made by Hirschberg:

http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/pkay6/?action=view&current=HirschburgCasedVase.jpg

But there's still a market out there for them, even attributed correctly, as some folk like to collect bright cased glass with these zany 1970s shapes regardless of who made it.

Another Hirschberg shape:

Would it be fair to say that a lot of this type of glass gets misattributed?
£1 seems a pretty good deal whatever it is anyway!

Yup - eBay is full of these vases being sold as Holmegaard.

In one instance an eBay seller bought one of these vases from me, peeled off the original label and then listed it as Holmegaard with a £50 Buy It Now!

So, yes, the misinformation prevalent on everyone's favourite auction website does make it very easy to get the attribution wrong on these vases. And £1 is still a bargain - I think I sold my last one for a little over £20.

The vase you had off me was identical but in blue with a label I seem to remember, It went for £6. I think you have had Holmegaard off me in the past as well.

The one I got yesterday is Holmegaard unless I'm greatly mistaken. We cant comment as I've not put a photo up.

The Sherringham is up to £102 already so Shugden Antiques might have a Xmas party after all  :hiclp:

You must be mistaking me for someone else - I've only ever had one of these, the red one I attached a photograph of. It came as part of a small joblot of European glass. I'm not a fan of these vases, personally, so I wouldn't actively seek them out.

If your blue one had a Holmegaard label, then it was 100% put there by someone else after it was manufactured. These vases are very definitely German.

Ive sent two or three parcels to your buisness address over the years i cant remember the exact piece. I'm using a diffrent ebay name these days though.

Ah, it's entirely plausible for other items, perhaps, but never a blue Hirschberg.  :)

Oh, is the cased green barrel-shaped vase you have on eBay the vase in question? If so, that's definitely not Holmegaard, nor Hirschberg. When you said 'hooped', my mind went straight to the vases I mentioned above. The vase you have listed currently is Chinese, I think - Eastern European at a push - and fairly new. Sorry.

The Stennett-Willson candle holder is your star turn here. I don't know current trends as I have been out of action for some time, but when I was collecting and selling Stennett-Willson a few years ago, these 9 ring holders were fetching 4-figure sums regularly and easily. Just shows there are still amazing bargains to be found.

RP — Easy to spell Stennett-Willson:-

  • Double barrelled name, so double every letter you can.

  • It's the only difficult name I can always remember.   Most of the glassie names we need are in Ivo's Glass fact file a–z, one of many reasons why I always have it with me (together with a magnifying glass).

Put some photos up then ...

If it's this vase you're talking about (link below) then as Nic has already stated it's not Holmegaard but most likely modern Far East production.  Still very decorative though, but nonetheless not Holmegaard.

Well done on your finds :)  It is very exciting to get real bargains :)

I don't seem to find anything much nowadays, too many dealers looking for the same things in my area.  I did have a lovely time on holiday searching new areas, although my family find it very boring and drag me away ::)

There's not an exact match here, as the 'Holmegaard' vase is considerably newer than these from the 1970s, but hopefully this advert for Dalian of China will illustrate at least a quality and colour match:

    http://www.theglassmuseum.com/Chinese.html

And this advert for Holmegaard 'Carnaby', which represents most of their decorative cased glass output, to show how the vase in question is nothing like Holmegaard's output in terms of shape, thickness, colour or style:

I wouldnt get caught out with Chinese 'Holmegaard' these days, my glass skills are more honed though I still have rooms full of un-id'd glass.

The Sheringham sold for £765 & the buyer showed it off a couple of years ago as his star piece of Stennet Willson glass on Antiques Road Show. He used to work with him.

Nic, thank-you so much for your knowledgable and reliable input here  :-*
    - I now know I have a pair of Hirschberg red vases/candlesticks - they're exactly like the one you show!
(I had thought they might be Japanese....  :-[ )

Actually those are Japanese, see: http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/japanese_glass/japaneseglass_home.htm

The Hirschberg ones are a little different: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-4805
