I love a good Manson, so is this Willie at Pauls studio? or Paul himself?

I have not seen a salamander / lizard like that one that was made by Paul Ysart or known to have been made in Paul's own studio. The seller has included, in the listing details, a comment received which seems very reasonable to me and mentions two books to check with.
Other books with relevant information are Bob Hall's Scottish Paperweights and John Simmonds' Paperweights From Great Britain 1930-2000.

The red ladybug I have seen in many WM weights but never in a PY weight.

Hi All
I believe this to be by Willie. I had the exact weight a couple of years ago and it had a WM cane.
Willie made many Salamandas of differing colours. I have an unencased version in my "Magic Box".
Paul made only a few and they do not look anything like these Willie weights.

hi Roy
i think you better rephrase " they do not look anything like these Willie weights" i thought only JD made them.... even though i think for a damaged weight £151 at the moment is a bit to high in my eye's
-
Hi Ray
I must admit I have never seen a Willie weight made by John or anyone else for that matter.!!
I agree about the price though, much too high for so much damage.
The John Simmons book has a lot of info on this weight and incidently I think the weight in Pats book was mine.

Roy ...John made them while he was at Caithness as friggers for the girls wedding gift's
-
Ray, could you please confirm, with references, the info that you have given, especially "JD at Caithness".
Willie Manson made various types of lizard weights during his "Scotia period" as evidenced by catalogue details, let alone actual weights with "WM" canes, "Thistle" canes or "Scotia" labels.
As one who does not like to comment too much on currently live eBay auctions, I'll leave it there for now. ;D

A picture paints a thousand words !

Hi all
Despite the fairly extensive damage this weight is now at £491 - still with 2 1/2 hours to go!
I agree that on the face of it the lizard and other lampwork look remarkably like the
Magouillat lizard weight from Willie Mansons Kilwinnin period as shown in the Simmonds and
Flemming/Pommerencke books.
However one concern is that there is no mention of a signature cane and as far as I know
all Willie's weights from the Killwinnin studio , other than the Scotia range, were signed with
the WM cane.
I have checked the lizard weights at the 1992 Ysart exhibition and as

Hi all
OOPS !!
That last post had something missing - what I should have said was that I have checked a video taken at the Paul Ysart exhibition in 1992 at Broadfield House and the only lizards seen in a PY weight were of the same style as the those in the pictures posted by Daveweight. 8 minutes to go and £868 now !!
Best regards
Derek

Okay, now it's sold, those who know what it really is please speak up!

My view is that it's a Willie Manson weight and may well have been from his "William Manson Paperweights" period of the early 1980s. It's certainly not a Paul Ysart one and I don't think it was made by Willie at the Harland studio. It matches well to others illustrated in books and appears to be a "Magouillat Lizard", as Derek has said, but each of those weights would normally have been signed and dated.
That there is, apparently, no signature cane is interesting. Perhaps it is possible that the central grinding had removed the identifying cane ... but if so, the cane would have been very thin to be completely removed without causing a deep hollow!
I hope that if the weight is subsequently repaired and repolished it does not alter the look of it too much.

So was the end price higher than it should be? Seems very high for a Willie Manson weight, but then what do I know!

Dunno, Ian. What is the "should be" price of any item? Seriously, though, I have no idea of what the "usual" price of (an undamaged) Willie Manson Lizard weight is, or has been over the past few years.
But £890 can currently buy a single-3D-fish by Paul Ysart out of the Sweetbriar sales site.
Edited to add: And in Sweetbriar Gallery, there is also a Double Salamander (with a single flower) by Willie Manson for £380 ... and ... a Willie Manson, signed and dated Lizard with a Ladybug(bird) also for £380. But those are not Magouillat Lizards, so perhaps that makes all the difference.
