Title: Caithness "second" Finding a name & date range
Post by: momma on November 20, 2008, 04:13:50 AM

I know this is Caithness Glass and that it is a second but I'd still like to learn a bit more.
It has a very delicate band of coppery gold ~ would this be aventurine?
Can anyone supply a "name" or year?
Diameter: 2 1/4"  Height: 1 7/8"
Weight: 210g

Hi Momma

Caithness produced nearly 3000 designs and the vast majority were abstract like yours.
The problem with seconds is that they could have been classed as a second as the
intended design did not come out right.

So a paperweight which may not be true to the original design which you have to try and
match against one of the 2000+ abstract designs - you see the problem.

Your only hope is if a GMB member spots your picture and has one of the same design in their collection.

There is a Caithness "bible" called the Charlton catalogue but I should warn you that most of the
the illustrations of weight designs are to say the least - poor !

Good luck

Derek

Tried looking through here (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=51)? A long way to go for completion but about 4,000 listed so far - we show all the colour variations too.
