Hi, a pair of augergine bud vases, 195mm & 197mm high with controled bubble base,
no pontol mark to base, thanks kieran
-
Hi these are not made by Whitefriars. Possibly Swedish or Czech................here's a link to a great bud vase site which may be helpful

Hi Kieran,
Most likely Swedish, I suspect the base is completely flat like it has been cut through, and polished. Another possibility could have been Magnor glass (Norsk), but the example I have has random bubbles, yours are well controlled, hence my decision to go for Sweden. Maybe Smälands Bruksglas. Unlikely to be Czech.

I am not an expert on these bud vases, but would like to know more just for idendity purposes. I have one in Flint, very very similar to those above, slightly indented base, same controlled bubbles and with a Bohemia Czech label. i can't supply a photo right now as conditions are not good for photography.
Can you elaborate as to why yo think the above vases would not be Czech, I am sure I have seen some "Bohemia" glass made in a similar if not the same deep purple colour. Emmi

Hi Emmi,
I will do my best to explain, the differences are quite subtle. I meant that if the base was completely flat and looked like it has been cut across, then it would not be Czech. In my experience Czech bud vase bases are as you described, with a small indentation, a bit like a dimple. Czech bud vases usually (though not always) have clear stems and the bubbles are smaller.
I based my guess of Swedish on three things:
1) The bases and stems were the same colour.
2) The bubbles were a medium to large size, and controlled.
3) I made the assumption (maybe wrongly, I'm still waiting for Kieran to confirm that) that the bases were flat.
Had the stems also been narrow at the top I would have been totally sure they were Swedish, however I do have a few Swedish ones which are wider.
Nothings is ever definite is it?!! ;D ::)
