Title: Latticino Vase - Murano ?

Hi All - I am looking at this vase with some interest. Sorry about the poor photo I only had my phone with me.

It is about 5" (120mm)tall and 2" (50mm)  wide. There is a polished flat base unsigned. There is a milky colour to the glass which may show up in the photo.

I can possibly get some more photo's if it warrants further investigation.

I normally buy large pieces of glass but this one has caught my eye.

This type of filigrana is called merletto. The pattern of your vase's merletto is typical of Harrtil (Czech). It is often misattributed to Archimede Seguso, who did very different patterns of merletto. If you google Harrtil, you should find several pieces of glass similar to yours.

Mark Hill points out in Hi Sklo Lo Sklo that "vases are harder to find than ashtrays and bowls" in Harrtil. That's certainly been my experience. I haven't seen in it this shape before. I'd drop by and buy it if I were a little bit closer than Vancouver, Canada.

Hello all - I managed to buy it for about $US95 ($A140) and I am happy to have it in my collection although it is a bit overwhelmed by all the bigger bits.

I also have written to Mark Hill to see if its a Metalek design or one of the two women who designed in the factory.

I have attached better photo's for those interested in this type of Chekoslovakian glass.

It might be good to move this now it is identified.

This is the reply that Mark Hill kindly sent to me regarding this piece. I thought it might be of interest to some of you here.


Many thanks for your email. In my opinion, this is indeed from the 'Harrtil' range, produced by the Harrachov factory. The Harrtil pattern of woven glass fibres was actually designed by the company's technical director Milos Pulpitel in 1955, with forms being designed by Milan Metelak, Milena Veliskova and Marie Stahlikova, with the latter two mainly working on them in the late 1950s. I do not know which of them designed this form, as designs are very rarely attributed in this range, but vases are considerably harder to find than bowls and ashtrays.  Pulled rims and asymmetric forms are typical. I should think this dates from the late 1950s or 60s
