Title: ID help with jug & glasses - and best way to photograph them?
Post by: chloe on November 26, 2008, 05:34:39 PM
I can't decide of these are 80s or 50s - but they're lovely!  Jug has polished ponitl base, glasses do not and are quite light.

Also when I am photographing them the pattern doesnt come across as well as it should due to the image from the back being too distracting.  Have experimented from different angles but cant see to get anywhere - does anyone have any (simple, not too technical) advice?

TIA

My gut-feeling is that these are 1950s - although I don't know for certain because I haven't sold or come across this exact design before - it's just something about the design, the shape and the lightness of the glass that says 1950s to me.

With regard to photographing them - if you place them directly underneath a bright light source (rather than to one side as you have done currently) and photograph them without using a flash then you shouldn't have as many distracting shadows messing up the background (although I think your photos are pretty good as they are).

Thanks Pip - yes 50s was my gut feeling when I bought them, just the longer I've owned them them more I've wondered!  I've been usig them for quite a while which leads my pondering  :)

My guts agree, '50s, and photos are fine too.
I've not seen this before either, I also think if it was an '80s thing I might well have seen it around.

I might hazard a guess at Krosno, Poland. I have a labelled jug in a similar shape with a polished pontil.

It is similar but not identical to the Saville jug in Pirelli's 59 catalogue (http://www.glasscatalogue.com). They appear to have imported a lot of their blanks from France, although some from UK sources.

It is quite likely that it was decorated by someone other than the maker.
