Hi,
Has anyone seen a weight from Whitefriars like this ? Dia. 3" height 3/4" and dished with a slightly domed effect.
It has a date cane of 1970. I have not been able to show it to Ray yet and I am sorry about the rubbish picture.
Regards, Patrick.

Hi
Whenever I see this type of Shape I always think of what has been cut down to make it?
In this case it could be a cut down bottle or even a pin dish.
Having over 120 Whitefriars weights in my collection I would be amazed if it was originally made like this.

I saw a dish recently that looked exactly like this

Hi Roy,
Your comment about cut down is certainly valid, however the way it is dished would be hard to achieve. I got it from a Junk shop in Muswell Hill and the seller told me it came from a house clearance in Kensington.
There are one or two small chips to the inside rim so it certainly was not cut down by the seller. I only paid 15.00 for it as the seller had not spotted the tiny date cane. Most of his junk is over priced.
Interesting that tzenka has seen a dish exactly like this.................
Regards and thanks , Patrick.

Hi Patrick
Does this item have a foot?
The diameter of a bottle is about 3 inches and you do not have to dish the base as it is already dished inside the bottle.
The sloping top would be the easiest way of regrinding a broken bottle side.

Hi Roy,
Yes I think you are 100% correct................... No foot and the short sides certainly come up as if they would be the sides of a bottle.
Regards and thanks, Patrick.
ps. Is it worth having the chips removed and me selling it ??????

Very unlikely Patrick. Would cost £30 to £50 depending on the chips size, position, etc and might not be an easy job. Weights like that perfect will only do £50 to £60 in general. Id just enjoy it if I was you. Thats what I do with a caithness ink bottle without stopper I brought, its a Peter Holmes piece, cost me £10 at a fair :)

Hi Patrick
Now we have more of a problem because most bottles do have a foot.
What does the base look like?
I am not too sure it is worth spending more money on regrinding, especially if it is a modified item already.

Hi Roy,
The base is just like a paperweight but not involving a colored button. It is made just like Ray makes his paperweights, ie in the Whitefriars style .
Here is a pic of the base .

however the way it is dished would be hard to achieve.
When you say dished, do you mean it is concave. If so, not hard, provided you have the right wheels. Just like grinding a large punty. ;)

Hi Adam,
No it is dome shaped................. I will try and take another pic.

If the sides are almost vertical, then it could be a cut down from a domed and flute-faceted weight. If the sides slope out towards the top then it could fit better with a regular sized faceted weight. But Roy is certainly the man to confirm or deny my thoughts as I only have one example each of those type of Whitefriars weights, and he has a house-full!
If I am right, then in either case, the way the top is repaired with an inward slope from the side would fit with a repair that has removed the lower parts of original faceteing, which would have had a reasonably noticeable inset into the dome. The shallow (new) dome of the top (if I have understood this correctly) would fit with a repair retaining the shape of the cane setup which would define the dome. If it had been finsihed flat or concave, it may have cut down too close to the canes.
