Title: Oh dear, what have I bought ?
Post by: soledivo on December 05, 2008, 11:00:56 AM
I saw this in a local auction with the description being "Murano".
I didn't pay it any more attention as I was after something else, but for some reason I kept thinking about it.

Then I did a really stupid thing, the piece I wanted went for more than I was prepared to pay, so I thought I'd have a go at this 1.
You know whats coming next ?
I completely forgot my own rules.
I got into a bidding contest and ended up paying a lot of money for something I didn't really want, who's the idiot ?  :chky:

The weight is large and very heavy, I know little about paperweights, but it seems well made.

shade under 13cm high
9cm wide at the bottom.

Its so heavy I can't imagine it in a nice display cabinet.

I saw this at Eastbourne auctions and had a look at it. What did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking? Haven't been able to find anythin about it.

I don't think I have ever seen anything quite like that. It certainly looks like it could hold down a good amount of paper. ;D

This may not be a paperweight but a door stop because of it's size. It would take up far too much room and looks too cumbersome and odd shaped to have to pick it up and replace it on papers. Is there much in wear marks on the bottom to suggest it was sliding around on the floor. What ever it is it is a nice chunk of glass and looks quite well done. 30 pound does not seem an awful lot for a nice piece of glass. I could see it sitting on a mantle, or ir could make a good x-mas gift to another glass loverl
regards Bruce.

I don't know anything about your glass but I understand your plight, I've been there :) I know it seems like a lot because you betrayed your personal rule system but I really don't think 30 pounds is horrid for that piece. I wouldn't guess it to be a modern import from china or anything ( but WDIK)  the trick is to brainwash yourself into loving it 30lbs worth

thanks all,

it does have a fair amount of wear to the base and I think your right,
its the long scratches I would expect with sliding on a floor

I agree..it is a really nice piece...and know about "betraying personal rule"--but I think it is really a nice (quality) piece (yes-doorstop) ..and do hope you ENJOY it !!!

thanks Janette, I think its growing on me.

I'l be safe from going near any auctions for a while,

I'm going in for an operation on my spine tomorrow,
they reckon 6 weeks to recover, so my itchy fingers can have a rest.
