Title: another bit from me shed german uranium glass cup
Post by: RAY on September 09, 2005, 10:00:41 PM
this glass must have one hell of a lump of uranium in it, it glows without UV and with UV it's blinding, it's only 2.5" high and it's got the most wonderful wheel engraving on the front the best i have ever seen so highly detailed, it's of a palace or something with the words " kurcanl in Wiesbaden "   i think thats what it says but the letters are hard to read, the letters are in gothic, the handle is applied and it has a thick highly polished base,  any idea's of a maker?

Good luck on finding the maker!  These are commonly called SPA CUPS and were souvenirs from trips to the various spas in Germany.  You might also find them engraved with ANDENKEN as a word.  From a loose translation, the word literally means "memory", which translates to 'souvenir'.  I have had a couple of these and they are very nice pieces.  It is a real treasure! Estimated time from is about 1850-1860, and could have been made by a variety of sources either in Germany or Bohemia.

It says Kursaal in Wiesbaden, the Kursaal being the central hall for the spa - which was normally used for concerts.
I would put the date considerably later, say last quarter of the 19th century.
It is a souvenir from Wiesbaden, but not necessarily a spa cup. Spa cups have a level inducation, sometimes only mililiters, sometimes day doses. People going for a "kur" (as most elderly Germans still do, every 2 years, paid for by the insurance!) would slowly build up their intake of water over a 10 day period - marked on the cup.

hmmm. well that is history meanwhile, Ivo

'kur' originates from 'curing' and hopefully insurance companies  in Germany will not pay for it unless really needed!

Totally OT I know, but I wonder if that's where the band the Kursaal Flyers got their name from? ("Who?" I can hear younger board members asking!)
