Title: Large crystal drinking glass acid etched makers mark 'Co'
Post by: glass on January 20, 2009, 09:03:20 PM
Hello, this is a high quality drinking glass. It stands 9" and is signed to the base of the foot, Co.

Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks

That's a nice, fine glass.  :)  I wonder if the Co. isn't just where the pontil mark on the base has been polished out unevenly?

Hi Max :fwr:, the pontil mark has been totally removed by the star cutting and the acid etch mark has been applied over the top of this.

I must say well done for the ID of the Whitefriars vase. Thanks

Perhaps you could take a more oblique view of the base?  It still looks like circular roughness from polishing to me.  It'd be interesting to see how the cutting interacts with the mark.  Oh, does one cut go across the 'C' shape?  If so then the Co. mark was there before the cutting.

I feel like super-sleuth.   ;D ;)

The mark is sandblasted so source will be relatively modern, say 60s onwards.

Hi Max, the Co mark is in two half's, so it gives the appearance that the cutting is running through the mark.

That is because you cant have a circle in a stencil.

Hi Frank, your the man, so thats one way how to tell if a mark has been sandblasted. Any other tips? Is it the size, are sandblasted marks usually small?

The difference is in the texture, under a glass you will see irregular pits or impact craters. But a stencils usually enough too, but acid marks can be, or look stencilled too. Acid marks will be much smoother though as it is an all over (the etched area) process.
