Hello all, I seem to have acquired a number of old drinking glasses that I know nothing about, have tried to ID myself but most of the guides I've seen to shapes etc seem to be for georgian glasses and I don't think that these are. Any help appreciated as to age and how to describe them, you don't have to be polite! The first one I believe is called a bucket rummer, certainly has some age looking at the base.

Second one, no idea, again seems pretty old looking at base wear.

More to come if you can stand it. Some of my pics seem too big to upload though, bit mystified as all taken with the same camera on the same settings, I'll get there in the end ::) cheers, Gill

Hello Gill,
The first glass is an English Victorian pub rummer with bucket bowl on capstan stem c.1860-80, used for drinking beer.
Does this glass have a gadget mark (tool marks on the centre of the underside of the foot) or a polished out pontil mark? Its most probably a gadget mark and the rummer made from soda glass, is there a flat sound when you tap the bowl? Georgian rummers have pontil marks and are generally made from lead glass. Rummers are sought-after today for drinking beer and wine.
The second glass is an English Victorian small wine or port c.1880
Cheers

Thankyou so much! I'll have a good look at the base of the first one later, also got some pictures of bases if I can get them to load, likewise I'll try to get the other glasses on. Really appreciate the detailed information, Gill

Hi Gill,
just a hint, when taking pictures of the base take it from an angle, it makes it easier to determine the pontil or other marks, when taken straight on a ground pontil can be lost in the view of the stem .
