Title: Blue Opal vaseline finger bowl possibly Powell?
Post by: Littleblackhen on January 28, 2009, 10:44:01 PM
I just bought a vaseline glass bowl recently, then today I noticed a set on ebay which look very similar attributed to Harry Powell.  I wondered if it is possible mine is the same?

The ones on ebay are here :-

It's hard to tell, given that your pictures are not the same poses as the "Powell" ones, but it does appear that the Powell bowls have deeper scoops than your's does.

We had these same bowls on here before and they were identified. See here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,23660.0.html)

Here (http://www.whitefriars.com/contents.php?pageNum_Recordset1=4&totalRows_Recordset1=97&ID=74) is another identified one for you to compare and a straw opal one here (http://www.20thcentury-glass.com/glass/english/powell/20041022-01/20041022-01.htm)

Hi Carolyn,

I know my photos were awful, I couldn't stand up long enough to take care with them yesterday, and my arms kept shaking, as I am not too well at the moment.  Looking at the photos on ebay, I felt the scoops were pretty much the same, although they don't give measurements.

Hi Christine

Thanks for the links, they really do look similar.  The blue in mine doesn't look as strong as in the one on the Whitefriars site, but it does seem to change according to what light it is in.  Do you think I could safely attribute mine to Powell then, or was there someone else producing similar?  It certainly has age as it has a lot of wear on the base.

I have a straw opal bowl as well which is almost identical, but is about 5mm taller, which I bought from a different seller.  I am buying a lot of vaseline glass at the moment, it is the current craze :)

Thanks both of you for your comments :)

Janet

5 mm is well within the acceptable variation range, we're talking handmade glass from the 1890s remember. The blue would probably have varied as well as.

Blue opal wouldn't generally be considered vaseline though

It is very complicated this glass business isn't it?

Is straw opal considered vaseline glass then?  I tend to apply it to anything that fluoresces under ultra violet  :-[

I shall define what I am collecting at the moment as misty, opalescentish, blueish, greenish and strawish colour glass then ;)

Straw opal is because it contains uranium, which is what fluoresces bright green
