Title: Bigaglia ? Franchini? Or more modern ?
Post by: tropdevin on February 02, 2009, 09:41:23 AM
I see why one could take this paperweight (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335820906&toolid=10001&customid=&ext=330303835940&item=330303835940) to be antique Venetian, but the latticino twists look to be too good, too colourful and too uniform for the 1850s. Is it a later version, and if so, how much later?

According to Sarpellon in Miniature Masterpieces, Mosaic Glass 1838 - 1924, the portrait in that weight is from a range of second versions of Umberto I, by Luigui Moretti, 1888-94.

I suppose it's possible that late 19th century portrait canes could have been included in weights from the early 20th century, but perhaps the weight is all ok for the 1890s period?

I imagine Roy, and others, are keenly watching this one. :)
