Title: Cabinet Lighting (follow on from "For the love of glass" post
Post by: mikenott on February 04, 2009, 09:16:45 PM
Although not strictly glass related, has anyone found a good way to add LED/halogen lighting to a display cabinet to make their display really come to life? I have two corner cabinets and want to add to the two downlighters (about 40W). I seem to recall seeing some low voltage LED or halogen lighting that you could clip onto glass shelves. I have been known to lurk with intent around displays in shops trying to read the makers name. Any advice gratefully received!

I was going to add this to the post on "For the love of glass" but thought it perhaps warranted a separate question.

Michael.

LED lighting is starting to explode for this type of use. In addition to the normal type of led GU10 style there are also now available very bright tight beams and also strips that can be cut to the length needed. These latter can be easily stuck to sides top or bottom of shelves to achieve whatever light effect as need, there is probably also a UV version that would create a good glow with Uranium collections.

Larger electrical specialists should stock these but they are also found on eBay and the internet in general. The strip type need a transformer but this can be place unobtrusively, but not too far from the lights or you will need thicker vales. Cost might seem high, but the cost saving over Halogen power consumption is substantial with payback in 2 years or less - plus a positive environmental effect.
