Title: Great Little Elephant
Post by: TxSilver on February 07, 2009, 05:13:40 AM
Does anyone recognize this elephant? He is 4" to the top of the trunk. The lattimo is tinged with blue. I've been looking at Murano elephants for a couple of days now, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks!

One of the best books on Italian glass animals~ Animals in Glass. A Murano Bestiary ~ Canal & Stamperia Editrice ISBN 88  86502  56  7 in this book you will see the same tequnique used by Ercole  Barovier in the 30s and by Fulvio Bianconi in the 50s if you like glass animals this in my opinion is the best book you can have .jp Loads of Elies . :chky:

Thank, johnphillip. I have been looking for the book for a while now. It is hard to find. You are lucky to have it. The elephant has a Barovier look to it, but I'm skittish about attributing it without some official word on the design. I love the Murano animals, but they can be so difficult to attribute correctly!

YEE HA! I just bought one.  :chky: Amazon.com had three available. I would not have looked if you hadn't said something, johnphillip. There are two more still available if anyone is interested. Now if I can only get the book on Ercole Barovier, I will have all my dream books. (The Barovier book sold for less than half its value on eBay a few months ago and I missed it. Rats.)

When Anne first mentioned this, it made me think of pasta vitrea that was made to look like ceramic. I like the uncased "skin" of the elephant. The front and hind left feet are joined. I've noticed this for some of the Barovier and Fratelli Toso elephants, though not all.

As I was googling around, I stumbled on this link saying about a Murano Elephant.  It just says Murano style, but is it? or not? Just curious.  Looks Chinese....

Still no book, johnphillip. Amazon is usually so fast. This was bought from someone selling through Amazon. Maybe it will show up soon. I haven't heard from the seller yet.  I'll look for the heron when the book comes in. You actually have a Bianconi! My pockets are always too empty for his delightful sculptures. Do you know if there is a book that has all of the works he designed in his lifetime? He designed for several companies, so it is hard to know all the things he has done. Sometimes I run across something that looks like it could have been designed by him and it makes me wonder.

The book came in. It has great pictures. I wouldn't be a very good person to review the book, though. I am a bit disappointed. The pictures are big and few. It would be a good $40 book, but has too little to justify $140. I am probably just not appreciating it well yet. Sometimes my opinions change over time when I discover more about a book.

Hi Anita i am sorry you were disappointed with the book ,first of all that price knocked me over , i paid £19 for mine brand new from a discount book seller who goes round the fairs it was a quite a long time ago but what a difference , if you look you will see it is actually ~a catalogue~ from an exhibition in Venice so that limits whats in it ,
i believe it has about 110 pictures most of them are massive by normal standards and so clear  ,showing just about every technique of Italian glass ,it is edited by Marina Barovier and Atillia Dorigato you will have to go a long way to find two more knowledgable people , i am sure when you have more time you will appreciate it as i have never in thirty years seen a better book on Italian glass animals with such good clear large pictures . Regard and best wishess  JP . PS What do you think of my Aquatico Heron ?Item 92 Good Init

One thing I enjoy about the book is the Cappellin pieces. I have several Barovier and Venini books, so had already seen much of the content of this book. I noticed one sold on eBay for $40-50, which is a good price for the book based on information content. The retail cost tends to be much higher because the book can be hard to find. I've noticed a few copies are appearing now, so the cost will probably be coming down if anyone is interested. I would definitely keep my eyes open for bargains.

The Broadfield House museum shop would be a good place to look for such a book
