Title: Blue glass bowl wth applied blue glass spider web design
Post by: glass on February 08, 2009, 04:31:56 PM
Hello, I have this blue glass bowl with applied blue glass flashing in the design of a spider web. It has plenty of base wear and a rough pontil mark, I'm thinking English c1900 but don't really have any idea as to who the maker is. It stands 4 3/4" with a rim diameter of 9 1/4". Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm starting to think this bowl is Victorian nailsea glass, though I dont ever recall seeing it in blue.

It will be quite hard to place this pulled thread design. It seems the stand ring has been polished flat - which is not a technique usually associated with Nailsea and the age does not look in keeping either. The blue colour is new-ish.  And so you will probably have to live with the fact that you have a gorgeous bowl in the Nailsea pulled thread technique - but made much later by an unknown maker.

Hi Ivo, thanks for you input, I feel theres way too much age related wear to the body and base to be modern. The base ring hasn't been polished flat and I find it very hard to believe this bowl dates later than 1930's, but of course, if its been used nearly every day for 20 years I suppose it could achieve the same amount of wear. Cheers
