I've a pair of cast glass birds with holes in the middle. Both bear Pukeberg labels.
Just wondering if they're purely decorative or practical pieces, like novelty napkin-rings or somesuch? Saw one auction a while back that suggested they were meant to be laid flat and used as candleholders, but that doesn't make too much sense as the hole goes straight through and you'd get wax on your table.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance.

If a rolled up napkin fits through the hole, it is a napkin holder. And if the hole is too small, think little chickadees to accommodate litte yellow paper napkins for the easter breakfast table.
-
Or egg cups (holders) laid flat . How thick are they ? no personal jokes please .jp

I bet you all had a good laugh when i said egg cup but iittala have one so similar it is TIU original design Jorma Vennola 2690 . 090 munakuppi . aggkopp .eierbecher .coque tier .~ : Ahlstrom Finland , it is buried in the loft somewhere i will try to seek it out .JP

Oops, forgot to get back to this thread - sorry!
I tested the eggcup theory (with an unbroken egg, luckily), and it was slipping and sliding all over the place. So I suspect napkin-holder, which is a shame as bird-shaped glass eggcups would be terribly fun to have on the breakfast table!
The birds are 75mm tall, 20mm deep at the thickest part (they're slightly wedge-shaped), and the hole has a diameter of 30mm.

Hi Nick you can buy mine when i find it , still in original box plus label . I think it has a bit of age bought it from a house clearance several years ago .. JP
-
30mm is perhaps a tad skimpy for a linen/cotton napkin, but fine for a serviette
-
Just found mine i will stick it on ebay tommorow , Easter coming up it would make a nice prezzie for a loved one and Max it would look nice with an Owls egg in it . >:D
-
Thanks for the thought John, but I think my owl's a bit past egg-laying. :mus:
-
I'll keep my minces peeled for that - it will be interesting to see how similar the designs are.
-
Hi Nic i put it on ebay for 7.30 tonight looks like it could be the same designer item no 120377434987 . :huh:jp

Just spotted your eggcup in Iittala: 125 Years of Finnish Glass.
It was designed in 1978 and produced 1979 - 1987. Apparently 'Tiu' means 'Score' - not entirely sure what that has to do with birds or eating eggs really.
-
Thanks Nic one of the few books i dont have .JP . Do you think it could be the same designer .
-
There's no mention of Vennola working for any other glassworks besides Iittala in his artist bio, so I suspect it's just chance that they're quite similar.

Hi there,
those BIRDS are napkin holders/rings.
If I'll find Ad from 70S BELLE magazine I'll post it.
Cheers.

Many thanks for the confirmation - I'll look forward to seeing the original ad, if you can find it. :)
