Title: Identification of etched/surface decorated vase
Post by: zidori on February 19, 2009, 11:27:18 AM
I was wondering if this were a Caithness vase. The "hills" are etched while the brown landscape is surface decorated. The glass seems to have a thicker, glossier appearance than the Caithness vases I have encountered yet the style reminds me of Caithness. The rim of the vase is rounded rather than straight edged. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Ronnie

I forgot to mention that the vase is 6 inches high.

I've not seen one of these before but it doesn't seem like Caithness to me - the base looks wrong compared to the Caithness pieces I've seen/owned. It's a really nice-looking vase though.

Thank you for your reply. Could it be one of the Scandinavian factories? The glass has almost a purplish tinge to it and it is a heavy solid piece.. It is really quite stunning with the light streaming through it.

Hi Ronnie, I wouldn't honestly like to say. This site might help as a place to check: http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/pkay6/?start=1 - pkay6 has a huge collection of Caithness and other makers so you may find a match there, but you've hit the limit of my knowledge now. ;)

Anne - you are a star! even if we both got it wrong. On that fabulous site you directed me to, I found a Caithness Vase on Page 5, 2nd last row in blue with the identical design. It is Caithness Glass Reflections.
Many , many thanks not only for the input but for introducing me to this wonderful array of glass.
Regards
Ronnie

Thank's Anne. Where we will eventually list all catalogued CG production as well as much that was not catalogued. Concentrating on completing weights first, but glassware images are being accumulated. Thousands to come...

Excuse me sticking my oar in Frank but I have a vase which looks very like Caithness, etched with Musical Instruments, Tragedy Comedy masks etc and marked underneath Edinburgh festival '77, signed but difficult to make out, would a picture be of any use/interest to you?, cheers, Gill
