Title: Crying over spilled vases!!
Post by: lhazeldahl on February 26, 2009, 01:17:41 AM
Hi, I wanted to share my latest "discovery". I discovered that the other vase I was hoping to run across while unpacking yet another box, wound up broken, also. Well, at least they are a "matched pair". What a disappointment to see such wonderful vases broken like this, I don't even know what they are, who made them? Thanks for looking.. Linda

Linda — See topic Burmese? ewer with enamel and gilt decoration — Id & date please (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,21013.0.html). As you can see, same glassworks, same decorator, quite remarkable. You could have put all three together as a set!
I sourced mine from a UK antique centre. Where did you source your two from?

Yes, but perhaps not a true set, Bernard, as (at least) the handle of yours seems to be acid frosted but Linda's are not.

Problem is I think the only conclusions we came to were that it was not Burmese and not Peachblow.
And that it might be Bohemian, or Stevens and Williams, or Mount Washington's Rose
And there was a lot of online "shouting"
Personally I might go with the Bohemian option - but then I often do - but perhaps even more so now I've seen Linda's variation on a theme

Perhaps not the same decorator, rather the same refiner, whose decorators worked to a prescribed style

well,okay!!
I am so sorry to be so tardy in reviewing this post, what a great response to my unfortunately broken vases. Thanks so much for the interest and advise. I suppose I can glue the tops and consider them as display pieces. My father used to glue glass with canned milk, worked wonderfully well. I really love the art involved in these vases, and altho not a matched set with yours, Bernard, they could have very easily 'gone together', the decorations are so alike. Thanks again,
Linda

Christine — Definitely the same decorator, no question. "Where am I going to put four or five red blobs with no Butterfly? ... Ah, I know, I'll turn them into berries!" This is better than a signature.
Linda — Glad you came back. I agree not a matched set, but the same decorator, and all made within a fairly short time frame.

Bernard, I came upon my pair of these vases, inherited, in two seperate boxes, both packed for (I was told) over 40 years. Both were broken, which totally amazes me, since most of these fragile items are in such pristene condition. These vases came from a woman who was the third generation of appraisers and collectors, and the variety of items is vast. Of course, my favorite is the glass.
