Title: Controlled bubble dish with Dunhill reservation / menu card holder?
Post by: Bernard C on March 02, 2009, 07:09:32 PM

This is a good quality controlled bubble dish, diameter exactly 5", neatly drilled and fitted with a chromium plated Dunhill trade marked reservation / menu card holder.   It weighs 1lb 2¾oz.

Two queries:
  • 1. Maker, pattern number, date, &c?
  • 2. Why the Dunhill trade mark?   Surely it's use as card holder would have ruled out the use of the dish as an ashtray.   Or did Dunhill supply non-smoking accessories, just to increase awareness of their brand name?

  • Thanks for your interest.

Dunhill sell all sorts of up-market giftware, even the odd bit of furniture. I once had a superb Art Deco desk with their nameplate inside the drawers when I had my shop.

It wouldnt surprise me if Whitefriars had something to do with it , when they made items for other companys they didnt go in the catalogues IE Parker  - Ronson -  Aspreys . I will check it out with the ex staff .

You could ask the bubble nutters on Whitefriars.com who sit up all night counting the bubbles . ;D :chky:

JP — I'm a rib and other pattern repeat counter, so it is to my shame that I forgot to count the spirals of bubbles on my dish.   Thanks for the reminder to include this important information.   ;D

So, "I counted them all out and I counted them all back," twice — to make sure, and there are 24 clockwise spirals of bubbles, and 24 anticlockwise spirals of bubbles.

Bernard, have you thought about contacting Dunhill directly?  In one of the London Dunhill shops either in Sloane Street or Bond Street (sorry I can't remember now which one) they have the most wonderful museum containing all sorts of original Dunhill items and a curator who would, I'm sure, be delighted to help.

Did you manage to find out anything about this piece Bernard?  I'd be really interested to know if it *is* WF and what it's purpose is...

    Hi Bernard,
     I would say 100% Whitefriars...................

John Hobbs pointed you in the direction of the ' Specialist ' web site Whitefriars.com but I have saved you the trouble ...............

Check out this extract from the work book of Harry Dyer where 'Dunhill' is mentioned. what AT stands for I do not know but you may have thoughts ?????

    Regards,
                  Patrick. :)

    Hi Emmi,
I think you are spot on..................   I think Bernard's piece is in fact an ASTRAY.  The metal part could easily hod the cigarette safely and then let you pick it up for another 'Puff'

    Regards, Patrick.

Ps. Bernard....... if you are up for a sale , please let me have first go at it .

Thanks everyone for your fascinating input, particularly the Harry Dyer work book extract, Patrick.

Patrick & Emma — When Alfred Dunhill Ltd.'s order clerk placed that order for 160 Twilight Dunhill Ash Trays with Whitefriars in December 1957, he did so knowing that everyone concerned knew what he meant.   And he knew that in the near future, he would receive 160 pierced dishes.   Then, by fitting them with the appropriate metalwork, they became ashtrays, menu / reservation card holders, toothpicks, &c.   This flint example happens to have been fitted with the menu / reservation card holder.   That's all.   Just effective communication and intelligent design.

You were beaten by two emails, Patrick, so to be fair to everyone I have no option now but to list it on eBay.

Patrick — Thanks.   I was planning on moving this query to WF.com should no more information emerge.   I also have two difficulties with WF.com at present, almost no personal web space remaining for hosting images, and I seem to have mislaid one of my two passwords.

Pip — Thanks for the suggestion, but Patrick's new information makes it unnecessary now.

    Hi Bernard,

Ok...............  Can you try it with a lighted cigarette , so we can see how it is held safely and does not fall off the edge of the ashtray thereby burning your table top !!!!!!!!!

    Regards,
                   Patrick. :) :) :)

In fact John is correct - I've seen one in it's original box DUNHILL "PRONG" ASHTRAY which shows a diagram with a lit ciggy between the prongs.

    Cheers,   Stan. "

    Regards, Patrick.

Ps. When is it going on Ebay ??????????

I guess then it could be multi purpose, but I thought from the beginning it was an ashtray, even without the cigarette indents, which I believe were discontinued by Whitefriars after 1963???  (not exactly sure of the year)  when the Government of the time put an extra tax on indented ashtrays.  Elf and Safety  at it even then!!!  Emmi

Also this would do away with the extra high tax on ash trays  ,no grooves no tax and the fags (yuk) dont roll off and burn your table .
