Title: Pair of ring-moulded & cut decanters for Id please

Height 8 1/8" 205mm, with stopper 10 5/8" 270mm, weight of pair 3lb 13½oz 1747g.

Five moulded indentations, getting slightly closer together towards the top, each side and the neck cut into twelve panels.   Hollow (a bubble, not open) stopper cut with two rings, and cut into eight panels to match.   No obvious stopper number.   Pontil scar neatly and centrally ground out and polished.   Cut and polished flat base with a fair amount of wear.

I don't usually buy unmarked decanters, but this pair was so unusual that I risked it!

Enlightenment sought, please.

Hi Bernard,
it looked familiar, i went through Andy McConnells decanter book, not there, then i spotted this one, on the shelf,
which i think is what i was thinking of.
Mine is 12 sided, cone shaped, with 8 moulded or cut vertical indentations. All nicely polished, the base flat and polished, (signs of the polishing tool marks) Plenty of wear, i feel fairly sure its getting on for 200 years old. Just 6 Inches tall, no stopper. Its a nice thing. :D

Not a lot of help for a maker! I suspect English.  But do you think yours could be early 19th Century?

Hi,

I'm afraid I can't help with the ID of your decanters Bernard, but I would think that they are 20th century, if only because of their shape, which I believe was used more commonly in the twentieth than in earlier centuries.

Do you have a stopper for yours Andy?

Hi Nigel, and Bernard,
no stopper  :(  ( well , it has one that fits, but its def. not right)
My pictures came out a bit flashy, i feel it could be 4 times older than me  ;)
I still think they all could be Regency, and looking again at Andy McConnells decanter book, ive found one that is quite similar to Bernards.(and mine)
Bernard, do you have the book? Page 248 2nd row left. Its a cylinder shape, (pint size, is yours similar capacity? )
It looks as if it is most likely 12 sided, many more horizontal cuts, but style is similar.

Do you mean similar in that they are both cut, have a number of sides and two are cylindrical?? Sorry, but that don't make 'em the same :(  :o
The cutting on the decanter in McConnell is markedly different from yours and is synonimous with Regency (although copied in the twentieth century).

I'm sorry, but I find the idea of using similarity as a way to identitfy something a tad wayward :( :o By all means use it to narrow down the field, but don't confuse later cutting with Regency.

I do hope I get to see one them at an upcoming glass fair - Motorcycle Museum maybe?? That would be good, and it would allow for more informed judgement :) :)

Nigel, Totally understand what youre saying, narrowing it down is all im trying to do,
i dare say we could both hold the decanter in our own hands and get a much better idea,
Im 100% sure mine is early 19th C, and if you had it in your hands you would agree immediately,
its hard from photos sometimes.

Im sure Bernard will take them to the glass fair, i will try to make it.
I reserve the right to be proved right ;)  but accept i am more likely wrong .

Yep, I'm exhibiting, and should be back in the position I had when the fair was at the Motor Cycle Museum before the move to Gaydon - in the second room diagonally to the left opposite the entrance to that room (sorry, no stand numbers yet - too early)

I hope to see you , and many other readers and contributors to the GMB there on 3rd May.
