Title: Paperweight ID Help
Post by: tropdevin on April 07, 2009, 03:44:04 PM
Can anyone help with the ID of these two paperweights please? (Images are clickable thumbnails).

The first has carefully placed bubbles pressed into a ball of swirled ribbons and threads, rather along the lines of Liskeard Glass. There is an impressed base mark, whose shape I have shown (corrected for mirror image) on the mould at the side of the base image. Just over 3 inch diameter.
(http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/rosismum/th_1427a.jpg) (http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/rosismum/?action=view&current=1427a.jpg) (http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/rosismum/th_1427b.jpg) (http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/rosismum/?action=view&current=1427b.jpg)

The second has a delicate and complex array of mottled colours, a bit like Isle of Wight Glass, and is engraved on the base WA, MP, and 92. It is just over 2 inch diameter.

Uredale I think for the green one.

Many thanks to those who have posted here or contacted me: the green one is almost certainly Uredale, and the pontil stamp is their glassblower logo. It is similar in design concept to their current 'Pearls' design.

The blue one remains a mystery...

... no longer. This item is marked for the Melting Pot Glass Studio in Margaret River, Western Australia. This business was operated 1991-96 by artists Gerry Reilly and Kent Le Grand. From 1996 until today it has been the studio of Gerry Reilly. It has a website (http://www.meltingpotglass.com/) and a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/meltingpotglass/).

The paperweight in the photos dates from about the same time and is signed for the studio, but it is somewhat different in style with its clear casing. The bottle in the third photo is signed by Gerry Reilly himself although it is more of a kind with the surface treatment of your paperweight. The rough ground out pontil scar (seen in the photo of the base of my paperweight and in the OP's) is also characteristic of the Western Australian glass artists of this time.

I note that this solution is provided 7 years and 105 days after the original question was asked. That is not my record, which remains the one I answered here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,17227.msg332863.html#msg332863) at 7 years and 115 days after the question. (Yes, I was tempted to hold out for 11 days before answering, but that would have been in poor spirit.) My fastest answer is 4 minutes and 52 seconds here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,59292.msg335331.html#msg335331).

Hi.  Many thanks - always good to know what these signatures mean and where pieces come from!
