Title: Mdina Craggy Knop Candlestick - Is it??
Post by: jimbo1 on April 11, 2009, 12:01:23 PM
Hi All,

Wonder if someone could help me identify this candlestick. It looks very similar to the craggy knop chalice vase featured in Mark Hills excellent book but it's a candlestick. Mark mentions these to be rare.

Colour is light brown/ochre with chloride streaks, there is a broken pontil to the base but with no other marks. There are a few bubbles within the glass.

Just wondering if it is Mdina and what date.

Many thanks

James

Looks to me like you have found the necessary info, Mark Hill mentions this colour too. I have not seen one of these before and although I have read the book and dip in and out from time to time the candle sticks had never stuck in my mind. Must be getting older.

Nice find!

John.

I don't think it is Mdina, certainly not an older piece. The bluish colour of the clear glass and the unfinished pontil worry me. Mdina is/was not the only company to use silver chloride. Annette Meech also produced similar things way back... just for a start

Looks like I jumped the gun then, the jury appears to be out.

I agree with Christine, it doesn't look like Mdina to me,

The stem and base just don't look right.
but, you never know, maybe it is and rare !!!  :chky:  :chky:

good luck

The colour looks very Spanish recycled to me...

I have a Mdina one.. the colours are the usual blue/green and although not signed or labeled it is definitely Mdina bought back from the Island late 70s. I believe these to be quite scarce. Paul

Hi All,
James sent me this image last week, before I had seen this post. In my opinion it is a piece of Mdina, and indeed quite rare. The cracked-off pontil is standard on these, based on the five or so I have seen and handled. I own two, and have seen this colourway before. All have the same design, particularly as regards the actual holder with a collar beneath.
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry, also forgot to say that the Harris family have one in their collection, brought from Malta, which was the only one I had seen for quite some time...!

Not sure why this is still in unresolved

And I was becoming astounded that 2 Mdina candlesticks appeared on the same day..
(then I read the dates and Christine's comment. I can't think how I missed this post originally - but my pc doesn't always keep me signed in - M keeps disconnecting me, so I lose a lot of posts)

Just wanted to add this one to the thread. This is 15 cm tall and FULL of tiny bubbles.....There seem to be two versions of these , those with wider bowls to house the base of the candle and then the thinner bowls with more of the stem appearing above the craggy knop . The bowl is attached to the stem just above the knop . Four pieces in total...the foot, the tapered stem , the craggy knop and then finally the bowl attached to the stem .
