Title: I'm Excited - is this Parrot Murano?

I have just got swept away by a large parrot, nothing unusual there!

He is 460mm (18") high and weighs 4.2Kg (9.25lbs) There are a couple of minor chips one on the base and another flea bite on a wing apart from this he is perfect. The base is ground flat and shows some age.

The colours and work in him has me very excited. Hope he excites you as well.

Anyone know anything about this exquisite piece?

BTW they also had a pair of Toso cockerals but both were chipped with their beaks missing.

I believe you are right that the cockatoo is Murano. The birds are made in the style of Formia. One person I know does these types of pieces, but they are signed and the wings are not like your bird. I see unsigned birds similar to yours often, but have never seen an attribution for them. I am always impressed with large pieces of glass and the skill required to handle the glass.

Thanks Anita - looking around the web it seems that this piece is still made and often in pairs. There are about 8 of them on one site I looked at.

Happy to have it for what I paid and it looks good in the front room.

Looks like Barbini to me but may also be made by some modern master. Definitely the manner of Barbini, though

Not to be disagreeable here in the USA, but definitely not Barbini. I would put it in the large, but generic bin.  :)

Thanks Anita - There was one on ebay last week and it had a label stating Formia de Vetri. It is still made today and there are several about.

It could definitely be right. I looked and saw its tail wasn't short. It is just the angle of the photo. The Formia cockatoos are at www.formiaglass.it/gb/coll_zoo.html if you haven't seen them yet.
