Title: Very Thin Glass Bowl - Ribbed and Threaded - ID HELP!! English?
Post by: obscurities on April 23, 2009, 08:52:12 PM
Figured while I was at it, I would throw this one up and see if anyone has any ideas. It has been suggested to me that it is English, but I really don't know. Been in my collection for years with no intention of letting it go, as it is truly an amazingly well executed piece of glass. I have looked at thousands of images of glass since I purchased this, and have never seen another one executed the same. Flat ground and polished underside. No marks of any kind.  Size is roughly 7 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. At one point I thought Bohemian, but it is much lighter and thinner glass than any of the Bohemian pieces I have handled.....

Thanks in advance, Craig

It could be English (but I have no real idea) and was made in a similar way to the green bowl but without the second layer - blown, machine threaded and then blown into a ribbed mould. The flat polished base might be a clue. How many ribs are there?

Hello,

As a general rule of thumb (therefore there will be exceptions) British hand blown glass does not have a flat polished base.

I have added a few more images of the bowl and the flat base. It is ground flat and highly polished. I also need to correct dimensions, as it is smaller than my estimate was before. ( I was actually too lazy to walk down two flights of stairs in the house to measure it!!) It is 5 inches in diameter and 2.75 inches tall.

To answer your question Christine, it has 25 ribs on it.  As shown in the third image, the ribbing is quite pronounced. Much more so than the S&W piece I have posted

Thanks Nigel for the info on the pontil on English pieces. I know there are always exceptions, but as a general rule that is quite useful information I did not know.

Thanks, Craig
