Hello, I bought this little jug today, its 6 inches tall (15cm) it has an applied handle which trails round the neck. The glass is mottled and shiny inside, the outside appears to be covered in very fine dust so its a little rough to touch. My husband seems to think its been sand blasted!! The bottom has an inverted rough pontil. It may be a bit of tat, (please feel free to tell me if it is!!) ;D Any info welcome, cheryl

The rough texture on the outside is called 'overshot'. Other than that I can't help.

It is a scavo (escavation) vase that is made by many Mediterranian countries for the tourist trade. Gordiolas Glassworks of Spain makes similar pieces, but the ones I have seen have a foot. You can see a sample of the Gordiolas pieces at http://www.gordiola.com/data/regalos/Excavaciones.pdf

Maybe it has a similar provenance to this one:

Hi there, you often see these for sale at historical dig tourist centre type places..They are menat to look like Roman glass i believe. I saw some very very similar at the roman ruins at the isle of wight last year i believe they had been made by Glory Art Glass which is on the IOW
hope this helps

Thats quite interesting, it doesn't look old, theres no wear on the bottom. I only paid peanuts for it on the carboot . Are these worth keeping or should I get rid of it next time I have a carboot stall myself? Cheryl.
